Four years after its launch, the current state of Warzone has left some fans nostalgic, wishing for a return to the old days.
The year 2020 marked an important milestone in the twenty-year history of Call of Duty, with the addition of Warzone, the free Battle Royale. This period, from Warzone’s release to Black Ops Cold War later that year, is considered Warzone’s heyday, when the game was relatively simple before the integration of new mechanics “complicated ” the gameplay.
Over the years, Warzone’s player base has been left wanting more, with fans longing for the days of yesteryear.
A player recently argued for a re-release of Warzone in a post shared on the Battle Royale subreddit, arguing that both iterations of Warzone were complete failures for part of the player base.
“It’s time to cut the losses and just re-release Warzone. They can’t recreate the magic, they can’t make a new version because they don’t know what they did to make it great the first time.”

For anyone familiar with the game, this player’s feelings come as no surprise. Warzone has evolved into a complex entity as new titles have been released, with developers working to integrate new mechanics into the game. This pipeline forced Activision’s hand to create a sequel that was launched alongside Modern Warfare 2.
With that in mind, some players have accepted the reality of the game’s current state. “I have some bad news, you will never be able to recreate that ‘magic’ of playing Warzone for the first time. Verdansk came at the perfect time, both in terms of what we had played before and the conditions of the world,” mused one player.
Others shared similar opinions while reflecting on the constant state of integration. New additions such as weapons have left players perplexed, with some weapons “seeming” better than others. “I think it has a lot to do with how the weapon balance and gameplay feel changes when it’s not just Infinity Ward working on CoD. It’s just my opinion, but once other studios intervene, the weapon suffers a lot.”
