Excitement is building for the upcoming release of Kraven the Hunter, set to hit cinemas in less than two weeks. For those eager to get a taste of the action, the film’s intense eight-minute opening sequence is currently available to watch online.
2023 has been a tumultuous year for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (not featuring Spider-Man himself). Despite the studio’s high hopes, Madame Web faced disappointments from both fans and critics, and Venom 3 concluded Tom Hardy’s trilogy with some of the lowest ratings yet. Nevertheless, the film has surprisingly grossed nearly $470 million globally.
As the year wraps up, Sony is positioning Kraven the Hunter to introduce audiences to this R-rated origin story, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the infamous villain. The plot will follow Kraven, the son of a Russian mobster, as he transforms into one of the world’s most fearsome hunters – a figure not just to be feared for hunting big game.
Given the challenges faced by previous films in this universe, skepticism remains. Sony Marvel films have struggled to secure positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and many viewers question the need for another film centering on a Spider-Man antagonist without the titular hero’s presence. In light of this, the release of the opening sequence serves as an intriguing teaser.
Opening Scene: Kraven’s Brutal Escape from a Russian Prison
The opening sequence sets a dramatically tense atmosphere as Kraven embarks on a prison convoy bound for a secluded Russian penal colony amid a desolate snowy landscape.
Unfazed by the jeers from fellow inmates, Kraven meets a solitary cellmate who expresses a desire for isolation. “We already have something in common,”Kraven quips, forming a tenuous bond. He proposes a wager: if he remains incarcerated longer than three days, the cellmate can “take his best shot.” However, the pair are hardly friends, as Kraven chooses not to share meals.
Over the next few days, Kraven draws the ire of two goons while working out in a restricted area of the yard. Demonstrating his super-human strength, he dispatches them effortlessly, before being summoned to meet their boss, Seymon Chorney, the leader of the Kirov gang, notorious for dealing arms that inflict sorrow worldwide.
Kraven boldly claims to hunt men like Chorney, who dismisses his assertion as fantasy. However, the myth comes to life when Kraven violently confronts his adversaries – breaking one man’s back, using another as a projectile, and trapping Chorney against a table. With a tiger’s tooth at Chorney’s throat, Kraven asserts, “There’s an ounce of truth in every myth,” before ultimately killing him and escaping amidst thrilling stunt work.
Director JC Chandor has urged fans to give Kraven the Hunter a fair shot, emphasizing the film’s unique allure. If the gripping footage resonates with audiences, they can catch the film when it premieres on December 13.
