Before starring in Deadpool and Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds had previously collaborated with Wesley Snipes on Blade: Trinity. However, their working relationship was not a smooth one.
Before becoming Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds had roles in three superhero movies: Green Lantern, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (although his portrayal of Wade Wilson is not considered), and Blade: Trinity, which was Wesley Snipes’ last film as the Daywalker.
Despite Reynolds’ best efforts, Snipes famously did not appreciate his improvisational style on set while playing Hannibal King, a fellow vampire hunter, in the 2004 threequel.
In a 2012 interview with IGN, Reynolds clarified that while there had been reports of a feud between himself and Snipes, they were exaggerated. However, he did mention that Snipes’ method acting had caused tension between them.
Despite never having met Wesley, I have heard that our personalities are complete opposites. I have only encountered his alter ego, Blade, who is known for being a method actor. I have a great amount of admiration for him and anyone who is able to fully immerse themselves in their craft. However, I must confess that I do enjoy trying to make him laugh.
“I vividly remember a moment during the movie where I gazed up at Jessica and, without even realizing the cameras were still rolling, uttered, ‘Doesn’t he hate me?’ Her response of ‘Yeah’ only confirmed my suspicions.”
“Regarding my relationship with Ryan Reynolds, I find that these ad-libs are a natural result of our dynamic and they work well.”
“In another scenario, I offer a dime store psychoanalysis to him, suggesting that he should consider speaking with a professional to connect with his inner child and perhaps try blinking more frequently. However, his response is a menacing stare, as if he could crush me into pulp.”
Snipes once again takes on the role of Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, indicating that their previous conflict has been resolved. The film even playfully references it, as Blade says to Deadpool, “I have never been fond of you,”and the Merc responds, “And that’s never going to change.”
