Highlights from the 2024 MAMA AWARDS: A Night of Bold Performances
On November 23 at 3 PM, the second chapter of the 2024 MAMA Awards took place at the iconic Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, with the talented Kim Tae-ri serving as the host for the evening.
Thematic Concept: “BIG BLUR: What is Real?”
This year’s awards showcased a unique concept titled “BIG BLUR: What is Real?”, infusing all performances with a thought-provoking theme that resonated throughout the event.
Star-Studded Performances
The lineup featured a myriad of high-profile performances, including spectacular sets from (G)I-DLE’s MEGA STAGE, ZEROBASEONE’s CINEMATIC STAGE, and Byeon Woo-seok’s EXCLUSIVE STAGE. Renowned artists such as aespa, BIBI, INI, MEOVV, SEVENTEEN, and G-Dragon also graced the stage, delivering unforgettable music experiences.
(G)I-DLE Shines with a Powerful Performance
As expected, (G)I-DLE captivated the audience with a performance that upheld their reputation for excellence. Jeon Soyeon, adorned in a striking neon outfit, stood at the center of a massive entourage of dancers, her dynamic presence commanding attention throughout the dome.
During her performance, she launched into an electrifying rap segment surrounded by an array of microphones, before seamlessly transitioning into group tracks “Super Lady” and “Fate” . This captivating display left fans in awe as Soyeon’s rap lyrics made a bold statement.

Soyeon’s rap included poignant lines referencing past controversies: “You said, ‘What can you guys achieve without Soojin?’ / Contract renewals, the company—figure it out yourselves / If I let things like that affect me, I wouldn’t have made it here / So I walk away.”
Previous Bold Moves Amid Speculation
This performance was not the first instance of Soyeon making headlines. During (G)I-DLE’s third world tour, known as “iDOL” , held in August at KSPO Dome in Seoul, she enacted similar boldness with her solo track “Is this bad b****** number?” , featuring themes that hinted at forthcoming contract terminations in November. This fueled speculation regarding her future within the group, prompting her agency to clarify the matter.
The agency announced, “Jeon Soyeon’s performance was purely artistic, and the members’ exclusive contracts remain valid until next year.” However, fans grew skeptical, noting that the lyrics concerning “November contract termination” displayed on stage screens likely required approval.
Transparency and Artistic Expression
In response, Jeon Soyeon took to social media, affirming, “This performance didn’t involve any lies, nor did I hide anything from the company. We rehearsed countless times together, crafting this stage collaboratively.” She further expressed, “While I harbor no ill feelings toward a company I’ve been with for over a decade, this experience has once again highlighted their shortcomings.”
