TikTok is home to a plethora of slang terms and acronyms that millions of users rely on for everyday communication within the app. One term that has gained popularity recently is ‘unc,’ which is also commonly used on other social media platforms like Snapchat and Twitter.

The term ‘unc’ may appear in various forms such as videos, direct messages, group chats, comment sections, and other platforms. However, what exactly does ‘unc’ signify and how is it typically utilized?

What does ‘Unc’ mean on TikTok?

‘Unc’ is an abbreviation for ‘uncle,’ derived from African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Although traditionally used as a term of affection for an older male relative, on TikTok, ‘unc’ holds a distinct meaning.

The term ‘unc’ is typically used to draw attention to a person’s actions or beliefs that appear unusual for their age. Essentially, it is a means of implying that someone is old, whether in terms of their actual age or their demeanor.

The term is also commonly used to describe men who excessively try to blend in with a younger generation. In a video by TikToker J0talk, he illustrates this by discussing a former classmate who, despite being in his mid-20s, still frequents college parties and pursues romantic relationships with much younger women.

“I refer to him as ‘unc’ because, honestly, he’s too old to be acting the way he does. I use that nickname to remind him of his age and make him feel guilty for his behavior.”The speaker clarifies.

J0talk also applies this label to middle-aged men who have an excessive fixation on sports. “When you have a family and a steady job, there’s no need to take it so seriously,” he remarks.
