What GT should’ve been: Dragon Ball fanart of a new starring trio has fans wanting a full series

Despite airing nearly three decades ago, Dragon Ball GT continues to be a topic of discussion among fans who still hold strong opinions about it. While some fans focus on the Super Saiyan 4 transformation, others are critical of its underwhelming plot.

Despite its popularity, one major issue that fans had with the series was its focus on specific characters. Throughout the first half of the anime, the spotlight was mainly on Son Goku, Pan, and Trunks. However, many fans argued that the cast should have been more diverse.

The emergence of these opinions occurred when an anime enthusiast shared a fan-made artwork based on the classic Dragon Ball series.

New Dragon Ball fanart featuring Trunks, Uub, and Maron on a thrilling adventure

On June 23, 2024, an X (formerly Twitter) user with the handle @CAL_MONSSI, who is a devoted anime fan, shared their latest fanart inspired by the beloved Dragon Ball series.

The uploaded picture shows Bulma, Krillin, and Goku inside a car during their search for the wish-granting orbs in the original scene from the anime.

Taking inspiration from this scene, @CAL_MONSSI recreated it with a new generation of characters. Bulma’s son Trunks took over his mother’s role, Maron stepped in for her father Krillin, and Uub filled in for his master Son Goku.

Despite numerous inquiries from fans about Goten’s absence, @CAL_MONSSI reassured them that the character would make an appearance in a future fanart – and true to their word, he did.

Goten was depicted in another drawing, which replicated a scene from Dragon Ball Z. In the illustration, Goten took the place of his older brother Gohan, with Pan replacing Goten and Bulla replacing Trunks.

Overall, both illustrations were well-received by fans, but the first one sparked much discussion and many fans even suggested that Dragon Ball GT should have adopted a similar style.

How Fans Reacted to the Fanart

After viewing the illustration, fans of anime were convinced that Son Goku should not have been included as a central character in Dragon Ball GT. While Trunks and Pan were also part of the main trio, many believed that the main cast should have solely consisted of the new generation of characters, such as Trunks, Pan, and Goten. This approach would have allowed for the development of characters like Maron and Uub within the series.

“GT tried to capture the original series’ energy by turning Goku into a kid. Meanwhile, they should have just give the actual kids in the series more screentime,”one fan said.

“Yeah. Uub can easily replace Goku in that part, and Goku can be a wise mentor for both him and Pan. But eh, they decided to stick with Kid Goku and had to turn him back into an adult (SSJ4) in later arc either way. I hope Daima can remedy this Kid Goku plot tho,”another fan said.

Despite this, it is a fact that the creators of the anime aimed to capture the essence of the original series. As a result, Goku was reverted to his younger form and the storyline revolved around the characters’ quest for the Dragon Balls once again.

Despite many fans believing that Uub could have easily taken Goku’s place in the plot, the anime ultimately chose to continue with Kid Goku, eventually showing his transformation into an adult through Super Saiyan 4. This decision sparked hope among fans, who saw similarities with Dragon Ball Daima and hoped for a successful outcome.
