What Happens to Uraume in Jujutsu Kaisen? The Fate of Sukuna’s Subordinate Explained

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Uraume is a captivating character who plays a significant role as a recurring antagonist throughout the series. Initially aligned with Kenjaku, Uraume was involved in the intricate scheme to seal away Gojo Satoru and resurrect Ryomen Sukuna. Dubbed “The Frozen Star,”Uraume first appeared in chapter 53 of the manga and episode 21 of the anime.

Following a tense battle spanning 267 chapters, Sukuna faced defeat in chapter 268, prompting Uraume to decide against continuing the conflict and ultimately sacrifice themselves. In the lead-up to this, Uraume was engaged in a fierce showdown against Kinji Hakari, where both sorcerers displayed remarkable skill, resulting in a stalemate with neither willing to concede.

Uraume hails from the Heian Era, approximately a thousand years ago, where they were a dedicated Curse User and served directly under Sukuna, the King of Curses. Uraume’s modern incarnation came through the character Shiori Himi, allowing them to exist in contemporary settings. Their allegiance to Kenjaku was pivotal in the plan to seal Gojo and aid in Sukuna’s resurrection.

After the successful resurrection, Uraume rejoined Sukuna as they prepared for the impending battles, demonstrating steadfast loyalty characterized by their calm demeanor. Uraume typically refrains from unnecessary dialogue, only taking action when needed. This loyalty is especially highlighted during interactions with Sukuna, such as greeting him after his confrontation with Jogo and again when Sukuna usurped Megumi Fushiguro’s body.

Throughout the 265+ chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen, Uraume has had limited exposure, primarily appearing in a supporting capacity for Sukuna, as well as in conjunction with Kenjaku’s schemes to seal the strongest sorcerer of modern times.

Once Sukuna inhabited Megumi’s body, Uraume took on a significant role in preparing the Bath ritual to enhance Sukuna’s control over his new host. During the intense Shinjuku Showdown, Uraume faced challenges as they dealt with Hakari. While anticipation grew for this encounter, creator Gege Akutami opted to minimize direct confrontations between Uraume and Hakari, instead focusing on the dominant battle of Sukuna versus Team Jujutsu High.

Ultimately, in chapter 268, after Sukuna was removed from Megumi’s body and became a diminutive mass disintegrating away, the same fate befell Uraume. Realizing that Sukuna’s defeat meant their own purpose had ended, Uraume too slowly disintegrated and ceased to exist.

Will Uraume Return in Jujutsu Kaisen?

With only one chapter remaining in Jujutsu Kaisen, the likelihood of Uraume’s return seems minimal. Unless Akutami decides to craft a sequel featuring a potential return for Sukuna, it appears that Uraume’s role has reached its conclusion. Their significance was intrinsically linked to Sukuna’s existence.

The backstory of Uraume remains shrouded in mystery, with the key known detail being their status as a Curse User during Sukuna’s reign. Allowing them to stand by the Demon King’s side was due to their dual prowess as a jujutsu sorcerer and an extraordinary chef, proficient in cooking humans. Beyond this, there is little revealed, unless Akutami has plans to shed more light on Uraume in the final chapter.
