What is Call of Duty: Future Warfare? The game abandoned and replaced by Ghosts

Recent leaks have revealed the existence of a Call of Duty game abandoned over a decade ago, which was intended to be the franchise’s first foray into a futuristic universe. So, what is Call of Duty: Future Warfare, also known as NX1?

Over the years, there have been many abandoned plans for Call of Duty games or features, which is inevitable for such a major franchise that releases games on an annual basis.

And recently, several videos, a mission list and more were leaked more than 10 years after a supposed release of a CoD game titled “Future Warfare.”

Here is everything we know about the game.

Who was developing COD: Future Warfare?

Future Warfare, or NX1, was in development by Neversoft, the studio behind Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

This came after many Infinity Ward employees left to form Respawn Entertainment, the development team behind the games Titanfall and Apex Legends.

When was NX1/Future Warfare due for release?

According to leaks, Future Warfare was supposed to be released in 2013, but was ultimately scrapped in favor of Ghosts.

Although jetpacks weren’t present in the leaked gameplay, this is clearly a futuristic game that could well have been the precursor to the advanced motion installments that followed: Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, and Infinite Warfare.

Future Warfare/NX1 mission list

A leaker posted a list of missions from the Future Warfare campaign:

  • Border
  • Visiting Hours
  • Into the Fire
  • Winter Anvil
  • Descent
  • Hit Hard at Home
  • Moonbase Assault
  • Operation Deadbolt

Future Warfare/NX1 multiplayer map list

Of course, multiplayer is the most important component of a Call of Duty game, and the map names were quite interesting:

  • Whiteout
  • Legacy Afghan
  • Legacy Crash
  • Legacy Outpost
  • Legacy Overgrown
  • Legacy Terminal
  • Apartment
  • Bin Laden’s Compound
  • Gladiator Assault
  • Merc Overgrown Map
  • Merc Mode Map
  • BENCH
  • JKU
  • JPL Dock

Why was Future Warfare canceled?

We’re not sure why this game was canceled, and we may never know, although it certainly generated interest among Call of Duty players.

Had this game been released instead of Ghosts, the trajectory of the COD franchise could have completely changed, depending on the success of NX1. Either way, it all seems to be a thing of the past now.
