A new drug trend is gaining traction among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, causing concern for parents – and with good reason.

The dangerous “chroming”trend on TikTok has claimed the lives of multiple young users who were exposed to it through a viral trend on the platform.

Esra Haynes, a 13-year-old student from Melbourne, Australia, was one of the victims. She tragically lost her life on 31 March 2023 at a sleepover, where she had participated in the TikTok trend and was exposed to chemicals. It is reported that Esra inhaled an aerosol deodorant, which is believed to have been the cause of her untimely death.

According to The Sun, Haynes suffered irreversible brain damage and went into cardiac arrest after taking part in the activity. She spent a week in the hospital before succumbing to her injuries.

Esra Haynes’ parents are now cautioning others about the dangers of chroming, a trend that has gained popularity on social media. During an interview on the Australian TV show ‘A Current Affair’, Paul Haynes stated, “If Esra had known the potential consequences, she would have never engaged in chroming. It is a deadly practice.”

On TikTok, individuals participating in ‘chroming’ share videos using the slang term ‘WhipTok’, which refers to the non-medical use of nitrous oxide. This term has gained popularity on the platform, with over 546.3 million views under the hashtag ‘Whiptok’.

According to the National Retail Association in Australia, the term “chroming”has evolved to encompass a broader range of inhalant substance abuse. This dangerous behavior involves the inhalation of various toxic chemicals, including aerosol cans, paint, solvents, permanent markers, nail polish remover, hairspray, deodorants, lighter fluid, glue, cleaning supplies, nitrous oxide, and gasoline.

According to the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Research, prolonged use of the substance can result in cognitive impairment, which may include difficulty concentrating, memory loss, impaired judgment, and a decrease in IQ.
