One Day is the new Netflix romantic series combining drama, comedy and love story – but what exactly is it about?
In 2009, David Nicholls published his novel One Day. And very quickly, the book became a literary phenomenon, finding itself on the lips of readers and the shelves of booksellers. Unsurprisingly, an adaptation then saw the light of day, with an excellent cast: Anne Hathaway in the role of Emma Morley and Jim Sturgess for that of Dexter Mayhew.
It’s Netflix’s turn to strike hard, by adapting the best seller as a series for its streaming platform. In 14 episodes of around thirty minutes, combining a very well-crafted bittersweet plot and successful performances from the actors, spectators will be able to discover the intertwined destinies of Emma and Dexter. But what is this romantic comedy about, exactly?
What is One Day about? Netflix romantic series explained
The principle of Un jour is simple: we follow the lives of two friends, always returning to the day of July 15. 20 years, 20 day of July 15, starting with the year 1988, when both graduated and met.
The book summary describes the story and its outline this way: “July 15, 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time. Everything opposes them, yet this day marks the beginning of an extraordinary relationship. For twenty years, every year, they will cross paths, separate and wait for each other, in the dizzying swirls of their existence.”
As for the Netflix adaptation, Nicole Taylor, Anna Jordan, Vinay Patel and Bijan Sheibani were involved in it. And the streaming giant presents its series in these terms:
“One Day tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who, on July 15, 1988, the evening of their graduation, spoke to each other for the first time. The next morning, everyone goes their separate ways. But where will they be on this ordinary day next year, the year after that, and all the years after that? Each episode allows us to find Dexter and Emma on the same date year after year and to see them evolve, change, get closer and further apart, go through moments of joy and sorrow. One Day tells a love story spanning twenty years, based on the worldwide bestseller by David Nicholls.”
Ambika Mod, also known for This is Going to Hurt, plays Emma. For his part, Leo Woodall, who made his mark in season 2 of The White Lotus, plays Dexter.
One Day is available on Netflix on February 8, 2024.
