Despite the solemn occasion, Queen Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle) arrive for the funeral, with Pharazôn drawing attention to himself. Elendil is particularly distraught about the king’s passing, while his daughter Eärien (Ema Horvath) attempts to console him in Númenor.

As Miriel stands on the dais, a grieving mother approaches her with no one to mourn. Miriel attentively listens to her and provides empathy, just before Elendil steps in. Will Miriel’s ability to empathize prove beneficial as she embarks on her reign over Númenor?

Pharazôn locates Miriel in the king’s former chambers and presents her with a choice between red and white for her coronation attire, symbolizing the present and past of Númenor. Miriel remains undecided, as she wishes to don the same white attire as her father and longs to witness an eagle during the ceremonies, despite Pharazôn’s preference for red as a symbol of the new ruler’s arrival.

At the pub, Pharazôn joins Eärien, Kemen, and Lord Belzagar. Kemen makes a loud statement, declaring the Queen unfit to rule due to her blindness. Belzagar nods in agreement and mentions that many had considered choosing Pharazôn as the rightful heir to the throne. However, Pharazôn expresses dissatisfaction, stating that “many”is not enough. Eärien chimes in, suggesting that she may have a way to convince more individuals to reconsider their opinions.

Valandil, a close companion of Isildur (portrayed by Alex Tarrant), abruptly breaks into the gathering, enraged by their scheming against Miriel. He cautions them about the perils of the Southlands and sternly warns Kemen that he will be held accountable by him if he defies the Queen.

Despite Eärien’s exposure of something forbidden, their embarrassment is fleeting. Following this, Miriel can be observed scouring for a specific item using the bangle she had taken from her father. This bangle also serves as the key to his tower – the Palantir, which is no longer resting on its base.

Middle-earth Gets Ready for Battle

Adar (Sam Hazeldine) rallies his Orcs for the impending battle against Sauron. He reassures a concerned Orc that as long as he is alive, their safety can never be guaranteed. The Rings of Power have given the Orcs a sense of humanity, evident as one expresses worries to Adar before checking on his family. As the night progresses, a troll appears at their camp, carrying a skull and determined to locate Sauron.

Celebrimbor extends an invitation to Durin and Disa to come to Eregion and visit him. He suggests that the rings’ power could aid the Dwarf-lords in restoring the mountain and supporting them in their fights. Upon discovering the need for mithril, Celebrimbor offers to create the rings in exchange for the valuable ore.

Despite Durin’s reluctance, Annatar assures him that the agreement will ultimately benefit their kingdom and possibly even mend the rift between them. However, without Elrond’s guidance, Durin remains hesitant to strike a deal and becomes suspicious of Annatar’s praise. Disa then suggests taking some time to consider their options in order to avoid any potential conflicts, and Celebrimbor agrees, going against Annatar’s wishes.

Disa is determined that Durin must inform his father about the plan, otherwise she will take it upon herself to do so. After their return to the forge, Annatar reveals to Celebrimbor that Gil-galad has put a stop to the production of rings. This prompts Celebrimbor to deceive Annatar by claiming that the forge will be shutting down, with the intention of writing a letter to the High King to commend him on the successful creation of the rings.

Upon hearing from his aide Narvi, King informs him that the citizens are requesting for him to open the grain reserves in Khazad-dûm. Prince Durin, who brings the offer from Celebrimbor, joins the King for a discussion on the petition. Durin also expresses his regret to his father, which is acknowledged but not fully accepted by the King. Durin further reveals his lack of trust in the offered power before the King takes his leave.

3. In The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 3: Isildur and Arondir Reunite

In the barren Southlands, Isildur and Berek stumble upon a marsh filled with lifeless bodies, reminiscent of the Dead Marshes described in The Two Towers. Isildur discovers a cart surrounded by the corpses of humans and horses and encounters Estrid, the lone survivor. Believing him to be an Orc, she attacks him, but later reveals that the boats have already departed for the coast.

Upon encountering a dying man, the two realize that he is involved in a scheme to steal from them. Just in time, Arondir appears and rescues them. He advises them to head to Pelargir instead of seeking out their attackers. With urgent matters to attend to, he bids them farewell and departs.

The funeral of Bronwyn (played by Nazanin Boniadi) is taking place. She was a beloved character to me, known for her strong leadership and a compelling forbidden romance plotline. Boniadi’s activism, particularly her involvement with the Women’s Life Freedom movement in Iran, deeply resonates with me as an Iranian woman living outside of my home country. While I understand her choice to depart, I will greatly miss her presence.

Estrid hones her blade in order to eliminate the scars on her neck. As a decoy for Adar, Theo pretends to be his ally in assisting Isildur’s escape with Berek. However, their plan is thwarted when they are ambushed, and Theo comes face to face with an unknown presence before Isildur is captured.

An Unexpected Visitor at Miriel’s Coronation

On the day of her coronation in Númenor, Miriel sticks to her plan of wearing a white gown, while Pharazôn surprises everyone by appearing in a red outfit. As the ceremony begins, murmurs in the crowd criticize the Queen’s decision. Miriel then addresses the crowd, urging them to think about who motivates them to speak out and inviting them to mourn. Eärien steps forward, claiming to speak on behalf of her brother, and reveals that Miriel only consulted the Palantir following the previous king’s instructions.

Upon seeing Miriel’s reaction, Pharazôn orders the destruction of the stone, which was thrown into the crowd by Eärien. This causes chaos as the crowd gathers around Elendil and the Queen, and a majestic eagle appears, appearing to favor Pharazôn. With the people on his side, Pharazôn takes control of Númenor.

The highly anticipated Season 2 premiere of The Rings of Power came to a close as King Durin, Prince Durin, and Disa fulfilled their promise and presented the promised Mithril. Annatar and Celebrimbor continued to forge additional rings, bringing all the beloved characters up to speed.
