When is the time-skip in One Piece?

The popular manga and anime One Piece includes a two-year time-skip. However, where and what events occur during this period?

Despite being around for more than two decades, the popularity of One Piece has only continued to rise. This is not surprising, especially with the recent success of Netflix’s live-action adaptation which has brought a whole new fan base to the franchise.

The time skip in One Piece is a crucial aspect of the plot, resulting in a noticeable change in the series’ atmosphere. After the two-year interval, the Straw Hat crew emerged even stronger and more determined than before.

At this point, the time-skip occurs and the events that transpire during it are as follows.

Time Frame of the One Piece Time-Skip

The time-skip in One Piece takes place in episode 517 of the anime, or chapters 597 and 598 of the manga.

After being separated at Saboady Archipelago, the Straw Hats encounter the challenge of saving Monkey D. Luffy’s brother Ace from being executed.

Over the course of two years (or one episode), the Straw Hat crew dedicates themselves to becoming stronger pirates. Fortunately, the characters and dynamics that you know and love remain unchanged, so there is no need to worry.

In essence, the time skip is a period during which the Straw Hats are dispersed and embark on their individual training for the New World. Despite not altering the core aspects of the characters we have grown to adore, it greatly influenced the narrative.

After the death of Portgas D. Ace in episode 482 (chapter 573), the time skip was triggered for Monkey D. Luffy. Despite Luffy’s attempts to rescue his older brother by participating in the Impel Down and Paramount War of Marineford, his efforts were ultimately in vain. Admiral Akainu was responsible for Ace’s tragic demise.

After the encounter, Luffy came to the realization that his crew was still lacking in strength. In response, he discreetly communicated to the Straw Hats through a secret message published in the newspaper, stating that they would regroup in Saboady in two years.

Following the advice of Silvers Rayleigh, a renowned pirate and former first mate of Gold Roger, Luffy, who was feeling devastated, decides to take a two-year break for the entire crew to undergo training. Luffy joins Rayleigh on their journey to Rusukaina.

Rusukaina is an island located in the Calm Belt that is infamous for its danger, even among the fearless Kuja. With 48 seasons that change on a weekly basis, this island is home to over 500 beasts that possess the ability to kill.

Following his departure from the island, Luffy achieved mastery over all three forms of Haki and successfully developed both Gear Four: Boundman and Fear Four: Snakeman.

During the time skip, Usopp experienced the most significant transformation in his abilities.

Prior to the time skip, we witness him being marooned on the Boin Archipelago, a group of islands that are actually carnivorous plants in disguise.

Usopp encountered a scientist named Heracles, who instructed him in the art of combat using a unique seed known as Pop Greens. When launched from Usopp’s slingshot, these seeds transform into a distinct variety of flora.

Ultimately, this indicates that Usopp has acquired the ability to engage in combat using various types of plant-based materials, such as vines, gas, and carnivorous plants. This marks a significant transformation from his previous fighting style prior to the time skip.

After the time skip, Nico Robin’s Flower-Flower Fruit powers experienced a significant growth. She became capable of summoning massive limbs and producing clones of herself. Additionally, she acquired proficiency in Fish-Man Karate, which has proven to be advantageous for her in the New World.
