Although Supergiant’s highly anticipated Hades 2 introduces new characters such as Melinoe, players may be curious about the role of the game’s previous protagonist Zagreus.
The much-anticipated early access for Hades 2 has arrived, allowing players to experience Supergiant’s latest journey through the Underworld. Unlike Zagreus, who previously ascended to the surface, players will now take on the role of his younger sister Melinoe as she sets out on a mission to defeat Chronos.
Despite Melinoe’s stunning design and captivating abilities, fans of the original Hades game may be curious about the whereabouts of Zagreus and whether they will have the opportunity to encounter the first protagonist in Hades 2.
Zagreus in Hades 2
Zagreus’ sole appearance in Hades 2 is currently limited to a portrait discovered in Melinoe’s room at the Crossroads, the central location you revisit after each attempt. The incomplete painting depicts Hades, Persephone, and Zagreus admiring a recently born Melinoe, symbolizing the joyous reunion of the family.
Nevertheless, do not anticipate encountering Zagreus in the flesh, at least not during the early access period. Due to the escape of the Titan Chronos from his confinement in Tartarus and subsequent takeover of the Underworld, Zagreus, along with his parents, fell victim to his overwhelming power. As a result, their location remains a mystery at the beginning of the game.
Thankfully, the goddess Hecate rescued the young Melinoe and nurtured her, preparing her to confront Chronos and rescue her family. Although Melinoe has no recollection of her absent parents and brother, she is cognizant of their existence and is determined to rescue them. Players can even witness Melinoe’s contemplation of the family portrait during breaks between runs, as she reflects on her grief and determination to fight for her family.
After defeating Chronos and freeing the Underworld from his grasp, players may finally catch a glimpse of Zagreus at the very end of Hades 2. However, those anticipating a heartwarming reunion between the long-separated siblings will have to exercise patience until the game leaves early access and is fully released in the future.
