Where does vanilla flavoring come from?
According to a 2007 study, beavers are known to produce a substance called castoreum, which has been classified as a safe additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been utilized in perfumes and foods for over 80 years.
Wildlife ecologist Joanne Crawford from Southern Illinois University explained to the National Geographic that in order to study beavers, she must get close to their hind end. Despite people’s reactions, Crawford assures them that the beavers’ scent is actually quite pleasant.
“Continuing, she mentioned that it was possible to extract the fluid by milking the anal glands, and that it could then be squirted out. She noted that the process was rather unpleasant.”
Despite the potential concern, it should be noted that the yearly consumption of castoreum is relatively low, averaging around 292 pounds.
Regularly on TikTok, a user will mention this strange fact, surprising a fresh group of individuals each time with the same information.
