The Remarkable Life of Ibelin will be accessible for streaming on Netflix in the USA, UK, and Europe starting from October 25.
Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Benjamin Ree, this documentary explores the life of the Norwegian gamer Mats Steen. It features personal testimonies from those closest to him, along with the chat logs and interactions he engaged in while playing World of Warcraft, particularly as his character, Ibelin Redmoore.
A significant part of Mats Steen’s narrative revolves around his journey following a diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive disorder that leads to muscle degeneration. The story was initially covered by the BBC in 2019 but subsequently faded from the spotlight, even as it remained a cherished part of World of Warcraft lore.
The film made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, and its plans for wider release remained unclear in the months that followed.
When announcing the deal to stream the film on Netflix, director Benjamin Ree expressed his excitement that Steen’s inspiring story would now be available to a much broader audience.
“It’s a huge honor that Ibelin will now be on Netflix,” Ree stated. “Mats Steen’s story will reach millions of people worldwide. I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Along with the confirmation of the film’s availability on Netflix, a new trailer has also been released, offering a glimpse into the documentary’s contents.
