Filming Locations for Masters of the Air
Masters of the Air was extensively shot in various locations throughout England, including London, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire.
Some of the specific filming locations include:
- Trinity Square, London
- Oxford city center, Oxfordshire
- Dalton Barracks in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
- Newland Park, Buckinghamshire
- Bledlow, Buckinghamshire
- The Hind’s Head in Bray, Berkshire
- Hemel Hempstead’s Old Town, Hertfordshire
Surprisingly, although the majority of the series is set at Thorpe Abbotts, an RAF base in Norfolk that was later transferred to the US as the 8th Air Force expanded its operations, it was not actually filmed in Norfolk. Instead, the production team constructed an expansive set in Newland Park that accurately portrays a 1940s air base.
According to Caroline Comer, sales and marketing director at developer Comer Homes, the site was chosen as a filming location for the series because of its pristine natural surroundings and expansive green areas, which were prevalent during the war. This statement was reported by Bucks Free Press.
The show was not shy about its spending, with a reported budget of $250 million. Star Jon Ewart, who played Lt. William Couch, described the impressive set to HELLO, saying, “I remember arriving and being blown away. There were 100 extras marching down the road, military buildings, and even military vehicles and planes passing by. They truly spared no expense, building an entire barracks and leaving no detail untouched.”
One of his main principles was: This must be authentic. Whether it required more time or a larger budget, this had to be genuine. This greatly aided the actors in delivering their finest performances.
