Despite the large cast in Jujutsu Kaisen, there has been uncertainty about the main characters of the series. With 258 chapters, 2 seasons and a total of 47 episodes, as well as a movie, the series boasts a remarkably diverse group of characters, all of whom have had their own moments in the spotlight.
Throughout the release of the animanga, characters such as Gojo Satoru, Ryomen Sukuna, and Megumi Fushiguro were gradually introduced and each played a vital role. With Yuji Itadori at the forefront of the Jujutsu universe, the recent addition of Yuta Okkotsu in the 2021 film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has sparked uncertainty about the main protagonist.
This article’s goal is to provide clarification on the main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen main characters
Yuta Okkotsu
Yuta Okkotsu, one of the main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, remained largely unknown until the release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 after the first season of the anime. This prequel delved into Yuta’s identity, showcasing his struggles with a powerful Curse, his journey towards overcoming it and altering his destiny, and his eventual induction into the world of Jujutsu as a special grade sorcerer.
It is intriguing to note that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was initially published as a one-shot. Due to its overwhelming reception, Akutami was inspired to further develop the plot, ultimately giving rise to the birth of Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite this, the author remained faithful to his initial concept and introduced Yuta as a prominent member of the main character ensemble.
Yuji Itadori
Yuji Itadori is equally regarded as a main protagonist in Jujutsu Kaisen, alongside Yuta. In order to survive, Yuji consumed a Special Grade Cursed Object, which ultimately awakened the King of Curses and thrust him into the world of Jujutsu.
Despite witnessing his control over the ingested Cursed Object, he was still given the task of finding and consuming the remaining 19 fingers of Ryomen Sukuna. It was made clear that he would face execution once this task was completed. However, fate had a different plan for him as he ended up becoming a member of Team Gojo, working alongside Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro.
The Other Main Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen Who Play Crucial Roles
Satoru Gojo
Gojo Satoru, a beloved character among fans, plays a significant role in Jujutsu Kaisen as one of the main characters. As Yuta’s mentor, the Six Eyes wielder assisted him in mastering his powers and eventually became the leader of Team Gojo, which consists of Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara.
Known as “The Strongest Sorcerer,”Gojo is crucial in guiding and teaching his students. Despite his immense strength, he becomes a target of the antagonists and is ultimately sealed in the Prison Realm. Nevertheless, he makes a dramatic comeback and takes part in the highly anticipated confrontation of the series.
Ryomen Sukuna
Ryomen Sukuna, one of the two antagonists and main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, has fully embraced his title. Known as the “King of Curses,”Sukuna was awakened when Yuji ingested one of his fingers during a dire moment.
Throughout the series, Sukuna continuously resided within Yuji, causing chaos whenever he took control. However, he bided his time, waiting for the perfect moment to target his desired host, Megumi, and fully manifest himself. The highly anticipated battle between Sukuna and Gojo resulted in Sukuna emerging victorious.
Megumi Fushiguro
Megumi Fushiguro, a pivotal character in Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen, was the initial sorcerer to encounter Yuji and was also there when Yuji consumed Sukuna’s finger.
Fushiguro’s potential as a sorcerer is truly formidable, making up one-third of Team Gojo. His Ten Shadows Technique has earned a reputation as one of the most powerful in the series.
Despite having all the qualities that made him a prime target for Sukuna, he eventually fell victim to his possession and has become a formidable foe for the Jujutsu High Sorcerers. With Akutami’s unpredictable twists, it is highly improbable that Megumi’s role in the story has come to an end.
Nobara Kugisaki
Nobara Kugisaki, one of the main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, is the tritagonist of the series. Like Yuji and Megumi, she is a student of Gojo and a powerful Grade 3 sorcerer. Her incredible talent and determination for Jujutsu sorcery were displayed when she faced off against Eso and Kechizu of the Death Paintings.
Nobara was a close friend of Yuji and tragically lost her life during the Shibuya Incident. She encountered a clone of Cursed Spirit Mahito and was ultimately touched by him. Despite his Idle Transfiguration ability, he caused her eye to explode, seemingly killing her in front of Yuji.
Despite conflicting beliefs among fans, it is uncertain whether she has actually died. With Arata Nitta’s timely arrival at the scene, only time will reveal the truth of her fate.
Zenin Maki
Maki Zenin is one of the main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. As a member of the Zenin Clan, she faced discrimination and mistreatment because she lacked Cursed Energy. However, she possessed a unique ability that challenged Jujutsu sorcery: Heavenly Restriction.
Through rigorous training and mastery of various weapons, she refined her abilities as a sorcerer with the ultimate goal of seeking retribution against her clan. However, a tragic event midway through her journey unleashed the full potential of her powers. With newfound strength and skill, she now stands alongside the most formidable sorcerers in the land.
Suguru Geto/Kenjaku
Ultimately, although it may be a bit complex, Suguru Geto and Kenjaku become integral figures in Jujutsu Kaisen’s main cast. Suguru was once Gojo Satoru’s dearest companion, and together they were renowned as “the most powerful.”Tragically, a pivotal event and a shift in beliefs ultimately drove them apart.
After Geto’s death, his body was taken over by an ancient Curse user named Kenjaku. Kenjaku then became the main antagonist of the series, along with Sukuna.
As a key figure, he was instrumental in the sealing of Gojo, began the Culling Games, and caused the downfall of Jujutsu society.
