Despite being a recurring boss in the Diablo series, Duriel has gained a significant following in the latest game.
Duriel is classified as a Lesser Evil, making him a formidable ruler of Hell. However, in comparison to the Prime Evils – Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto – he is considered to hold less significance in terms of power and status. He often joins forces with his fellow Lesser Evils, Andariel, Belial, and Azmodan, who have been known to either collaborate with or oppose the Prime Evils, depending on the situation.
Duriel’s popularity has noticeably increased in Season 3 of Diablo 4 and is expected to persist in Season 4.

Duriel in the Diablo series
Despite having been allied with them in the past, Duriel frequently clashes with Diablo and the other Prime Evils. According to the lore of the series, Duriel and the other Lesser Evils staged a rebellion against the Primes and exiled them from Hell, taking control of the realm themselves. However, this was all part of the Primes’ plan to manifest in Sanctuary (the human world in the Diablo series) and gain strength by corrupting humanity.
In Diablo 2, Diablo summoned Duriel to Sanctuary and formed an alliance with him. Following the release of Baal from the Tomb of Tal Rasha, the Primes left Duriel behind to ambush a group of heroes who were pursuing Diablo. The heroes quickly made their way to Kurast to free Mephisto from his prison, but Duriel attacked them along the way. Despite his efforts, Duriel was ultimately defeated and banished back to Hell, just like his sister Andariel.
Despite remaining on Sanctuary and continuing their assault on the humans, Belial and Azmodan were ultimately defeated by the Nephalem in Diablo 3. Following their defeat, Diablo consumed the souls of the four Lesser Evils when he transformed into “The Prime Evil” . While in this form, Diablo imprisoned both the Lessers and his fellow Primes. However, upon his eventual downfall, all of the Lords of Hell were banished back to the fiery pit from which they originated, and were released from Diablo’s control.
Other World Bosses will need to fall before you can summon Uber Duriel.
Duriel’s Role in Diablo 4
In Diablo 4, Duriel once again betrays Diablo and joins forces with Lilith to overthrow the Prime Evils. As a result, players encounter him in Act 6 of the game when Inarius, his Holy warriors, and the protagonist launch an attack on Hell with their army, causing conflict between them.
During their journey to open a portal from Inarius’s forces, the player characters are faced with the task of defeating Duriel who is determined to obstruct their progress. After successfully defeating the King of Maggots once more, he is banished back into the void. As a Lord of Hell, he is unable to be killed permanently and will need to reform himself before causing further havoc.
The encounter with Duriel, the final boss in Diablo 4, evokes memories of the battle in Diablo 2, but on a much grander scale. This climactic showdown even occurs in the same location where players faced off against Belial in Diablo 3. Additionally, players can challenge an Uber version of Duriel in the endgame of Diablo 4.
How to Summon Uber Duriel
By performing a Ritual of Agony, you can summon and engage in battle with Uber Duriel. Be prepared for a challenging fight, as Uber Duriel is the sole endgame boss in Diablo 4 who is able to drop Uber Unique items. If you are able to defeat him, the fight will certainly be worth your time.
That being said, achieving this is no easy feat. Our suggestion is to only undertake this battle if you have attained level 100 and are experienced enough to handle the game in World Tier IV (or Torment difficulty). Additionally, you will require specific items that can be acquired by defeating other endgame bosses:
- Mucus-Slick Eggs: dropped by Varshan
- Shards of Agony: dropped by Grigoire the Galvanic Saint
To obtain these items, it is necessary to defeat the bosses in World Tier IV. Additionally, if you wish to summon Uber Duriel, you must farm these items every time.
Once you possess these objects, proceed to the Gaping Crevasse dungeon located in Kehjistan. Once you have entered the dungeon, engage in combat until you reach the Pestilent Altar. You may now commence the Ritual of Agony, successfully summoning Uber Duriel to Sanctuary.
