HBO’s The Penguin is poised to broaden Matt Reeves’ expansive Batman universe. However, fans hoping for a Robert Pattinson cameo will be left unsatisfied.
Showrunner and writer Lauren LeFranc has confirmed that Pattinson’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader will not make an appearance in the upcoming series, meaning audiences will have to wait until The Batman 2 for his return.
There is, however, a well-founded reason for his absence. The Penguin will delve into the darker aspects of Gotham, centering on Oswald Cobblepot‘s quest to rise through the criminal hierarchy following the events of the 2022 film.
LeFranc emphasized that Bruce Wayne’s presence is unnecessary for the narrative’s depth. In an interview with SFX, she stated: “I understand why people’s desire would be to have Batman, or to think that unless Batman’s in a show or a film then it doesn’t have the same punch. To me, I think it packs a different punch.”
“Matt’s films provide a perspective from above looking down on Gotham. With Oz, we’re in the gritty streets, viewing the struggle from below as he strives to claw his way to the top,”LeFranc explained.
“Gotham is intriguing enough that it merits more exploration, allowing us to unlock new corners and discover what lies within.”
Reeves concurs that Wayne isn’t essential to the storyline, describing the series as “an extension of what is fundamentally there.”
He elaborated: “This is the world of Batman, but we’re navigating a side alley. The shadow of Batman is present; the specter of the Riddler looms. Everything from the last film informs this new chapter, and that’s how we begin.”
Thus, The Penguin can be viewed as a superhero series devoid of the superhero itself, yet it remains a vital part of Reeves’ universe. The show is set to unfold one week after the movie’s climax, where Gotham faces devastation from massive flooding orchestrated by the Riddler.
Fan excitement has surged in recent weeks, especially after the theatrical re-release of The Batman. On social media, the film has been heralded as one of the finest superhero films ever made, raising the stakes even higher for The Penguin.
Make sure to stay tuned for the release date of The Penguin and check out updates regarding The Brave and the Bold and Joker 2.
