Despite being popular among Black Clover anime fans, the series had a less successful beginning in comparison to other Weekly Shonen Jump magazine anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia. As a result, the series as a whole did not perform as well as its competitors.
Despite attempts from other series’ fandoms to discredit it, Black Clover did not have a weak beginning in comparison to the initial high expectations. However, it did fall behind its fellow anime in certain aspects. As a result, many fans point to Asta as the reason for these flaws.
Impact of Asta’s Voice on the Performance of Black Clover Anime
Despite the fact that voice actor Gakuto Kajiwara should not be held accountable for the Black Clover anime’s initial shortcomings, a number of anime enthusiasts have stated that they stopped watching the series due to their dislike of Asta’s voice.
It can be noted that Asta’s voice was excessively loud at the start of the anime. This led to many viewers finding the protagonist unbearable, resulting in a poor reception of the series. As a result, those who did not like the protagonist had no incentive to continue watching the show, leading to a weak start for the anime.
Despite initial concerns, those who stuck with the protagonist’s voice eventually found it to be no issue at all. This was due to the noticeable improvement of the voice actor over time. It should be noted that Gakuto Kajiwara had little experience as a voice actor prior to landing the role of Asta. In fact, he was only six months into his career when he was given the opportunity to voice the character. As a result, it took Kajiwara some time to develop and perfect Asta’s distinct voice.
Despite initially struggling, the Black Clover anime eventually gained popularity and became one of the most-watched anime in multiple countries worldwide. However, it still faced competition from popular series like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen.

However, there are some fans who argue that My Hero Academia anime should have also been given a similar approach from the beginning as the main character, Izuku Midoriya, was initially perceived as highly irritating. Thankfully, Studio BONES’ impressive animation and fast-paced storytelling aided in the success of the anime.
The initial lack of popularity for the Black Clover anime can also be attributed to its release format. In contrast to its competitors, which followed a seasonal release schedule, the Black Clover anime was aired weekly without any breaks.
This resulted in the anime being released on a weekly basis, a format that was considered outdated as fans had become accustomed to binge-watching. As a result, ongoing anime series were less attractive to viewers. In contrast, popular anime such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen followed a seasonal format, giving fans the opportunity to catch up before the next season’s release.
It seems that Studio Pierrot has acknowledged their mistake with the episode release format, as seen with the release of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War in a seasonal format. Therefore, it is likely that fans can anticipate a similar format for upcoming Studio Pierrot anime, including Black Clover. This change should hopefully help increase the popularity of the Yuki Tabata series.
