As the highly anticipated Blue Lock season 2 gears up for its premiere in October 2024, the anime has released its second promotional video to excite fans about the upcoming season. Unfortunately, instead of building enthusiasm, the latest promotional video left many fans disappointed with the quality produced by 8bit Studio.
When the Blue Lock anime first debuted, it captivated audiences by presenting a football anime that delivered the same excitement typically associated with popular shonen battle anime. Given the track record of these series, many believed that the football anime could potentially surpass Haikyuu as the premier sports anime. Sadly, the new promotional video quashed these hopes.
8bit Studio’s Work Has Potentially Thwarted Blue Lock’s Ascent Above Haikyuu
Among the many sports anime released, few have made as significant an impact as Haikyuu, produced by Production I.G. The series managed to ignite a passion for volleyball, a sport that is not as widely recognized in comparison to football and basketball.
While volleyball enjoys considerable global popularity, it does not reach the same audience size as football or basketball. Many fans approached Haikyuu with minimal understanding of the sport’s rules. However, the series effectively engaged viewers with both the story and the sport itself.
In contrast, Blue Lock does not face the same challenge. As a football anime, it doesn’t require extensive exposition on the sport’s rules for its audience. Furthermore, it gained significant traction right from its premiere.
With Haikyuu nearing its conclusion with its final films, fans were optimistic about Blue Lock potentially inheriting Haikyuu’s legacy and becoming the next big sports anime.
However, the release of 8bit Studio’s second promotional video diminished that optimism. Although the first season of the anime was well-received, manga fans were particularly excited about the upcoming U-20 Arc, widely considered the best storyline in the series. Given these high expectations for the fall anime, the promotional video was a letdown.
The latest video showcased content from the Third Selection Arc, preceding the U-20 Arc. While some parts of the video looked promising, the action sequences featuring football appeared notably subpar. Viewers criticized the poor line art in various scenes, with some visuals even resembling graphics from a PlayStation 2 game.
With ongoing concerns over animation quality in the Third Selection Arc, fans are anxious about what awaits in the U-20 Arc. Given the apparent signs of a potential poor adaptation, many are left feeling that 8bit Studio has failed to carry forward the Blue Lock legacy, unable to match the high standards set by Haikyuu!!
