Crunchyroll has changed the release schedule for My Deer Friend Nokotan, resulting in the absurdist comedy being available earlier every week.
In terms of the top anime of 2024, My Deer Friend Nokotan is definitely a strong contender. This unique coming-of-age series follows the story of a high school girl who forms an unlikely friendship with the new student, who also happens to be part deer. With its endless charm, humor, and quirkiness, this show is truly one-of-a-kind.
Crunchyroll used to release episodes weekly on Sundays, simultaneously with the Japanese release. However, starting on August 7, 2024, the schedule will change and new episodes will instead be available every Wednesday at 7:30am PT.
It was disclosed on the service itself for My Deer Friend Nokotan Episode 6. While the previous timeslot was a simulcast with Japan, the actual premiere of new episodes did not align with it as they first appeared on Abema for a brief period.
We will now receive episodes that are in line with Abema’s exclusivity, which is an interesting aspect of licensing. Generally, these deals don’t occur for releases outside of Japan. Whatever percentage of the audience was previously watching without delay was most likely a significant contributing factor.
Despite the uncertainty, the number of episodes for this first season is still unknown. This is not uncommon, as fans often only find out about the finale a week or two before its airing. This is also the case for Demon Slayer.
Regardless of its length, watching My Deer Friend is always a delightful experience. Unfortunately, there are currently only 43 chapters of Oshioshio’s manga available to adapt.
In simpler terms, make the most of this season as it may be a while before we receive updates on the next.
