Demon Slayer, as its name implies, features a multitude of demons that have been introduced throughout the series. Among these creatures, there are a few noteworthy details to note, with one in particular standing out. Despite their reputation for being monstrous, not all demons in the series have a repulsive appearance.
Koyoharu Gotouge’s expertise in character design is evident in his manga, where he incorporates various appearances for his demons. While some possess a more human-like look, others are depicted as mutated and grotesque. Each demon, much like every character, has its own distinct appearance.

Exploring the Irregular Appearance of Demons in Demon Slayer
Let us acknowledge the fact that demons can have varying appearances. For instance, Akaza is a demon who maintains a human-like appearance, serving as a prime example. However, this is not the case for all demons, such as the Hand demon who was a formidable threat in the Final Selection and had a highly distorted appearance. The same can be said for the Father Spider demon who resided in Mount Natagumo. While some demons may possess human-like appearances, the Father Spider demon was known for its grotesque appearance.
One factor that may account for this occurrence is the potential and current strength of a demon. Demons share similarities with vessels, as they are able to hold a specific amount of powers and Muzan’s blood. When the power within them surpasses their own potential, it can result in distortion and a grotesque appearance.
The Hand demon may not have been a significant danger when he was initially apprehended by Urokodaki, but his power grew as he consumed the humans who were participating in the Final Selection. As not all candidates were strong, the demon had the opportunity to enhance his abilities. This is likely why his appearance was altered in the anime series.
However, there was also Akaza, the Upper Moon 3 demon who appeared human-like. Prior to his transformation into a demon, he had been a highly skilled martial artist and had brutally taken the lives of numerous individuals in a state of fury. His abilities surpassed those of most demons encountered in the series.
Despite his immense power and potential, Kibutsuji Muzan’s final form in the Demon Slayer series is a grotesque and horrifying sight to behold. In his dying moments, Muzan transformed into a colossal infant-like creature with razor-sharp fangs, showcasing a clear imbalance in his abilities. This monstrous being is truly a testament to the terrifying strength and evil nature of Muzan.
Despite the strain on his physical body from the sun, he remained in possession of his powers. This is a crucial factor in understanding the prevalence of grotesque appearances in the animanga series. Such appearances occur when there is a disparity between one’s potential and current abilities, as well as in situations where the body is overwhelmed by an abundance of Muzan’s blood, resulting in the manifestation of demonic powers.
