Why Does Anna Delvey Wear an Ankle Monitor? Crimes and Netflix Series Explained

Despite not having time for this (or for you), Anna Delvey has found time to participate in Dancing with the Stars. However, the reasons behind her arrest and the presence of an ankle monitor remain unclear.

Many Netflix users were introduced to the name Anna Delvey through a new binge-worthy TV show that was added to the streaming service.

Despite never being renewed, the show was based on a true story and revolved around a woman who infiltrated the wealthy elite in New York City to swindle them out of millions of dollars.

Despite being under house arrest for years, Delvey herself is indeed a real person who is now preparing to compete on national television. However, many are curious about her story and the reasons behind her arrest, as well as how she is able to participate while wearing an ankle monitor.

The Arrest Timeline of Anna Delvey

In 2013, Delvey changed her last name (from Sorokin) and moved to Paris to study fashion, supposedly with financial support from her parents. That year, she relocated to New York City and took on the persona of a fictitious German heiress.

Despite reports of numerous discrepancies in her narrative (which will be discussed further on), individuals were easily swayed by her words. Consequently, Delvey was frequently spotted at upscale dining establishments, social gatherings, and professional gatherings. She purportedly left others to cover large expenses with the promise of reimbursement… which never came to fruition.

In 2014-2015, Delvey had gained notoriety and was a familiar presence in social circles. Her origins were unclear, but she was often spotted at prestigious events wearing extravagant outfits. She also had a tendency to conveniently “forget”to repay her friends.

During 2016, she resided in various boutique hotels within the city. However, her credit card was declined and she accumulated a bill of $30,000 with these hotels. A few days later, the hotels received the first of many “mysterious”wire transfers, which was Delvey’s method of transferring money.

Simultaneously, she left her friends with a bill of $70,000 for a Morrocan vacation. It was this same friend who ultimately reported her to authorities.

In 2017, her Anna Delvey Foundation successfully obtained millions of dollars in investment loans. However, it was claimed that she committed fraud against several accountants, wealth managers, and financial advisors, even resorting to forging documents in order to secure bank loans.

In October 2017, Delvey was accused of committing theft of $300,000 and attempting to steal $22 million, leading to a combined 10 charges of theft, larceny, attempted theft, and attempted larceny.

In 2018, she declined a plea deal even though she had been held without bail since her arrest. Her trial commenced in March 2019, during which Delvey remained steadfast in her belief of being a German heiress. She adamantly refused to attend if she was required to wear prison-issued clothing, and the trial gained notoriety for her fashion choices.

Delvey was convicted on April 25 of eight counts, including second-degree grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and theft of services. However, she was acquitted of first-degree attempted grand larceny and second-degree larceny charges.

She received a sentence of 4-12 years and was also mandated to pay a restitution fee.

In February 2021, Delvey was released from prison early for good behavior. However, just a month later, she was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for violating the terms of her visa. As a result, she was granted bail in 2022 and has been under house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor, since then.

Despite being on house arrest, Delvey has not been idle. She has given multiple interviews in which she defends her actions and asserts that she never believed she was engaging in deceitful behavior over the past decade.

During New York Fashion Week, she has not only hosted fashion shows at her own home, but also taken it a step further by being announced as a contestant on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars reality TV competition show on September 5.

Her story was turned into a Netflix series

If you are a Netflix subscriber, you may already be aware that the platform released Inventing Anna in 2022 after purchasing the rights for $320,000 from Delvey.

Julia Garner as Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna
Netflix

Throughout the nine episodes of the miniseries, Julia Garner skillfully portrayed the role of Delvey, taking viewers on a journey through her imagined past before the trial. As the story unfolds, we witness Delvey’s ascent in society while she carefully conceals her true background.

Delvey is shown staying at opulent residences and utilizing their credit cards, persuading her way into remaining on a private yacht for five days after the owners had departed, and deceiving hotel employees into extending her stays at exclusive boutique hotels. We are also shown her ability to secure funding for the AFD.

After two years, the show currently holds a 64% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score stands at 37%.

During her interview with Elle, Garner shared that she had actually met Delvey while the latter was still incarcerated. Garner described the experience as surreal, as Delvey turned out to be a very humorous and charming individual. Garner also mentioned that Delvey was eager to talk and share her story, despite being limited in her ability to do so.

However, I do not believe that she acknowledges any wrongdoing on her part. It appears that her main focus was on obtaining power, prestige, and success, and her mindset was still driven by these ambitions. She seemed to maintain the perspective that her actions were justified in order to achieve her goals.

She’s wearing her ankle monitor on Dancing with the Stars

In early September, promotional pictures for the Fall 2024 season of Dancing with the Stars will feature Delvey wearing her ankle monitor as a member of the cast.

Despite Delvey’s house arrest, it may seem strange that she can go anywhere in New York. However, according to Delvey, the boundaries of her house arrest have been relaxed, allowing her to leave her home as long as she remains within the city and wears her monitoring device.

She had to obtain special permission from ICE in order to participate in the show, which is filmed in Los Angeles. In an interview with EW, she stated that the choice to compete was made at the last minute, simply responding “why not?”when asked why she decided to compete in the first place.

“After being offered the opportunity, I had to obtain permission from ICE to travel out of state, which took approximately 10 days,”she recounted. “I was unsure until the last minute whether I would be able to go, and by then it was too late to decline, so I found myself here.”

Delvey jokingly mentioned that she plans to bedazzle her monitor with the assistance of her professional partner Ezra Sosa, in order to coordinate with the glitzy ensembles she’ll be donning on the dancefloor.

“What would winning mean to her? “Nothing,”she replied.”
