Why Hana Kurusu is Attracted to Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen: A Relationship Analysis

Despite being a popular animanga series, Jujutsu Kaisen stands out for its unique focus on elements such as dark fantasy, action, struggle, politics, tragedy, mystery, and moral ambiguity, rather than romance, which is often a central theme in many other series.

Despite the lack of romantic angles in the series, there are still examples of unrequited love between certain characters, including Hana Kurusu and Megumi Fushiguro. From the moment Hana was introduced, she showed a peculiar affection for Megumi.

It wasn’t until later that it was disclosed that Hana had developed strong emotions towards Megumi, after he had saved her as a child. This sparked something within her, which is the focus of this article.

In the 173rd chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, Angel, also known as Hana Kurusu, stumbles upon a weary Megumi after his victorious battle against Reggie Star. She takes it upon herself to transport Megumi, along with Yuji Itadori and Fumihiko Takaba, to a nearby hotel for his much-needed rest. As the night progresses, Megumi awakens and the group engages in a discussion about the Culling Games.

This marks Hana’s second encounter with Megumi, having first met years ago when they were both children. According to Jujutsu Kaisen mythology, Hana was a parentless young girl who had been taken prisoner by a malevolent Cursed Spirit. The creature acted as a maternal figure, providing food for the captive children, but ruthlessly punishing any who expressed discomfort or discontent.

Despite her reluctance, Hana had no choice but to continue living this way for a year until a young Megumi Fushiguro came to her rescue. While on a mission with Gojo Satoru, he learned of the Curse and used his shikigami, a white dog, to aid her in escaping. Hana was forever thankful to him and in the midst of it all, she developed feelings for the boy.

Therefore, Hana made a firm decision to follow in Megumi’s footsteps and dedicate herself to aiding others. She aspired to one day be deserving of standing by his side. Megumi’s actions had ignited a fire within Hana, and she held on to it for a long time. Reuniting with him during the Culling Games filled her with happiness and she was enthusiastic about supporting him once again.

As previously stated, Hana had developed unrequited feelings for Megumi, the user of Ten Shadows. His past actions were what gave her the opportunity to live. Without him, she would have been trapped by the Cursed Spirit for eternity, eventually meeting her demise while attempting to break free or fight back.

Despite Gege Akutami’s series primarily focusing on romance in a subtle manner, it subtly suggests potential character pairings. Megumi and Hana, for instance, could have potentially become a couple if not for Megumi’s unfortunate fate. Additionally, there are hints at a possible relationship between Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin. However, it ultimately depends on Akutami and the conclusion of the series as to whether these pairings will actually come to fruition.
