Why Kirishima Has a Scar on His Eye in My Hero Academia – Explained

Despite Eijiro Kirishima being a fan-favorite character since the start of the series, it is often overlooked that he has a scar on his eye, as shown by the results of the popularity poll for My Hero Academia.

Despite the fact that the scar is always visible, it is very faint, causing fans to often overlook it completely. So, what is the reason behind Kirishima’s eye scar? While many may assume that he obtained it during a battle with a villain in his Hero Work-Studies or Final War Arc, the truth is that he has had the scar for a long time. This begs the question, how did Kirishima end up with a scar on his eye?

The Origin of Kirishima’s Quirk in My Hero Academia

The scar on Eijiro Kirishima’s eye was a result of his first manifestation. At the age of three, he woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and rubbed his eye, accidentally scratching it while attempting to clear some rheum (eye gunk).

Despite being unaware, Kirishima’s Hardening Quirk had unexpectedly manifested, resulting in his hand becoming hardened. This led to him accidentally scratching his right eye, resulting in a cut and eventually leaving a scar near his eye.

Despite being hurt by his Hardening Quirk, this incident did not diminish young Eijiro Kirishima’s admiration for it. He still harbored a dislike for the Quirk, but he greatly admired Crimson Riot, a hero who possessed a similar ability.

Explaining Kirishima’s Hardening Quirk

Eijiro Kirishima possesses the Hardening Quirk, which grants him the ability to harden individual or multiple parts of his body. This rock-like armor allows him to endure various attacks, but like most Quirks, it has its limitations and gradually weakens over time.

Thankfully, with time, Eijiro was able to reinforce his tough physique and enhance his resilience and power. Kirishima’s Hardening Quirk, known for its durability, can endure a diverse range of assaults, including Dabi’s flames, Katsuki Bakugo’s up-close explosions, bullets, and Trigger’s quirk-amplifying drug-induced barrage of blades.

The anime has showcased three of his Ultimate Moves, namely Red Counter, Unbreakable, and Red Gauntlet.

The Red Counter is an attack used at close-range where he protects himself from an incoming strike by using a reinforced body, then retaliates with a straight punch.

Eijiro Kirishima’s Unbreakable technique allows him to reach his maximum level of hardening, rendering him virtually immune to most physical attacks. This ability transforms his body into an extremely tough and durable form, but it can only be sustained for a duration of thirty to forty seconds.

Lastly, Red Gauntlet is a technique where Kirishima charges towards an opponent and delivers a powerful punch to their abdomen. This move inflicts even greater damage when Eijiro is in his “Unbreakable”state.

Luckily, viewers will have the opportunity to see Kirishima in the Final War Arc of the anime.
