Why Major Characters are Killed in Jujutsu Kaisen – Creator’s Reasoning

Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, is unafraid to eliminate beloved characters, and recently revealed his justification for doing so.

Yuji Itadori’s life takes a dramatic turn when he ingests a powerful cursed object in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. As a result, he becomes the host for a renowned sorcerer from the past and enrolls in Jujutsu Tech High School to expand his knowledge of curses and retrieve the remaining fingers of Ryomen Sukuna.

After the Shibuya Incident Arc, the story takes a dramatic shift and numerous characters have met their demise. Gege Akutami has announced that the Shinjuku Showdown will serve as the final arc of the manga, signaling the series’ conclusion.

Gege Akiutami has been answering numerous fan questions during the ongoing Jujutsu Kaisen Exhibition at Shibuya Hakarie. Among them, a fan asked the reason for Mei Mei’s escape in Shibuya and the potential consequences (possibly death).

Gege argues that a character’s death is unnecessary if readers do not experience any feelings of sadness towards them.

Despite briefly fighting with Kenjaku, Mei Mei is eventually transported to Malaysia with Ui Ui. In Shibuya, the ongoing fight still claims the lives of popular characters like Nanami and Nobara in the manga.

A fan commented, “Gege has indeed admitted to killing characters in order to inflict suffering upon us. This man is even more malicious than Sukuna.”

“Gege is known for his belief in elevating someone to their highest point before breaking them down. This type of writer is one of my favorites. Another commenter on Twitter also recognized this, jokingly referring to it as the ‘the world shall know pain’ type of anger.”

One more fan added, “I predict that the fight between Hakari and Uraume will persist until Gege reveals Uraume’s tragic past of living in the mountains and having to resort to cooking travelers just to survive, until they eventually crossed paths with Sukuna.”
