Black Myth Wukong has been released and fans are currently rushing to play the game. It has already achieved great success, as the action-packed game brings the classic 1600s Chinese novel, Journey to the West, to life.
Game Science has incorporated elements of Chinese Mythology, particularly the tale of Sun Wukong, into the structure of their game. While the story may not be the main focus, the Chinese developer has significantly enhanced the powers of Sun Wukong through their game design.
As you navigate through the fantastical world of Black Myth Wukong, combat serves as the primary means of interaction. Your ultimate goal is to challenge the heavens and its defenders, while also facing those who seek to oppose you for simply trespassing in their domain.
Defining Your Style
No matter your combat style, there’s room for it here.
As Game Science places a strong emphasis on combat, their systems primarily revolve around enhancing your weapons, armor, and combat abilities. Although your selection of spells and skills is limited, you have the freedom to choose which areas to prioritize, allowing for a more personalized playstyle.
You have various options to customize this monkey warrior and make it your own. By investing in specific skill points, weapons, and armor, you can increase your critical chances and damage. This allows for powerful hits that far surpass your regular attacks.
Alternatively, you can take a completely different approach. Instead of relying on brute force, you can focus on developing a diverse range of skills and magical abilities, embracing the concept of a spell warrior. Perhaps you specialize in disappearing and reappearing to catch enemies off guard with powerful attacks. Or maybe you have the ability to turn to stone, stunning enemies who try to strike you and giving you the opportunity to launch a devastating counterattack against a boss.
Naturally, you could also invest in one of Wukong’s most potent skills – his capacity to create multiple copies of himself. Why settle for striking a major enemy only once when you can deliver multiple blows using numerous versions of yourself?
Zero to hero
Your Staff Stances are invaluable in Black Myth Wukong.
Naturally, you will begin at the beginning (following an impressive opening sequence), so even before you have the chance to choose your style of play, you will be thrown into the heat of battle and compelled to acquire fighting skills.
This is the part of the game where you will truly experience the fast-paced brawling of Black Myth: Wukong. With the help of Wukong’s renowned Ruyi Jingu Bang, you can strike, hit, and pummel enemies and bosses using the game’s combo system. Whether you choose to execute complex combos or simply mash buttons (we won’t judge), your goal is to defeat the obstacles that lie ahead.
The addition of stances adds a new level of flexibility to combat. These attacks can be quickly switched to during battle and enhance your already powerful focus attacks. For instance, you can perform a forceful slam onto the ground, a far-reaching thrust, or even perch on top of your opponent’s attack to avoid it.
During a crucial moment in Chapter 2, I discovered that the last item had been extremely useful. I was engaged in a fierce battle against one of the bosses, but I had run out of spells, gourd uses, and my health was dwindling. Thankfully, the boss was also close to defeat.
After being bombarded by a series of attacks, I frantically dodged away from the imposing figure (I don’t want to spoil anything) by using every last bit of my stamina. As a result of my earlier strikes, I had accumulated two Focus points which could be utilized for powerful maneuvers.
Despite the boss lunging at me, I managed to quickly retreat to the top of my staff, narrowly avoiding certain death. With a swift release of the button, Wukong twirled and struck the boss on the head with his massive stick, securing victory in a previously uncertain situation.
Mastering combat is the key
With so many bosses, mastering a battle is imperative.
The combat in Black Myth Wukong enables this type of gameplay, giving you the flexibility to strategize and approach bosses in your own way. It doesn’t rely on a wide range of tools or spells, but rather emphasizes your strengths and allows you to excel in the areas you choose.
In Black Myth: Wukong, you are not limited to one specific role such as a healer, tank, or assassin. Instead, you are equipped with a diverse range of abilities to overcome the challenges presented in the game. It is up to you to strategically utilize these abilities in the appropriate order.
