The Demon Slayer series showcases numerous formidable women who possess exceptional combat abilities. Notably, several of the series’ pivotal characters are female, and the manga’s finale will undoubtedly highlight this fact.
Nevertheless, there are certain members of the animanga community who do not fully grasp the significance of these characters and instead view them solely as means of providing “fan service.”This narrow perspective overlooks the true purpose of these characters and their role in the overall narrative.
Despite holding the esteemed title of Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji has unfortunately been labeled by some fans as fan service. This derogatory viewpoint is highly disrespectful towards her character.
Please note: This article may contain spoilers from the latest chapters of the Demon Slayer manga.
Demon Slayer: Why Mitsuri Kanroji shouldn’t be reduced to just fan service
Mitsuri Kanroji, also known as the Love Hashira, is renowned for her incredible strength. Her immense power is only surpassed by that of Gyomei, another member of the Hashira. Additionally, she served as Kyojuro Rengoku’s Tsukugo, and was trained by the Flame Hashira himself. Known for his unwavering sense of justice and ability to teach others, the Flame Hashira prepared Mitsuri to face even the most formidable demons.
This remarkable record is heightened by her accomplishments in the anime and manga series. She played an essential part in vanquishing the Upper Moon 4 demon, Hantengu. She bravely faced the demon’s strongest form and acquired the rare Demon Slayer Mark, a feat achieved by only a select few. She also played a significant role in the final battle against Kibutsuji Muzan in the series’ conclusion.
It is evident that this character is not simply a tool for fan service, as she plays a significant and dynamic role in the overall story. Additionally, her character delves into important themes that are integral to the narrative. Prior to becoming a demon hunter, her sole desire was to find a loving husband. However, her unique physical characteristics and eating habits were not well-received by potential suitors. In an attempt to be more appealing, she altered her appearance and starved herself, hoping to attract a suitor.
Despite any doubts or insecurities, she chose to embrace her strength and appearance, utilizing her abilities to aid those in need. As Kagaya Ubuyashiki proclaimed, her strength was a divine gift. This serves as a valuable lesson – to embrace our individuality and utilize our strengths for the betterment of others. Though it may feel uncomfortable to stand out, it can also be a source of resilience. It is crucial to accept oneself and simultaneously strive towards achieving goals.
Despite being a fan-favorite for her appearance, Mitsuri is also a character who embodies perseverance. Through her exceptional hard work, she was able to achieve the prestigious title of Hashira. Additionally, she also found someone who loved her for who she truly was, highlighting important lessons that Mitsuri teaches the viewers. This shows that she is a complex character beyond just being fan service.
