It seems that Bill Skarsgård has once again captured the spotlight by delivering a performance that chills to the bone. His latest portrayal as Count Orlok in the upcoming adaptation of Nosferatu is said to eclipse even his iconic role as Pennywise the Clown from the It series.
In this reimagining of the classic horror tale directed by Robert Eggers, Skarsgård embodies the menacing Count Orlok, the terrifying progenitor of the Dracula myth. The narrative unfolds as Ellen Hutter, played by Lily-Rose Depp, accidentally revives Orlok, who lurks in the shadows, biding his time to seize control over her.
Notably towering over others at over seven feet, with a haunting deep growl, Orlok represents a visceral fear. However, the character is crafted in such a way that audiences seldom see him fully, enhancing the suspense.
Count Orlok: A Terrifyingly Authentic Presence
Skarsgård himself describes Orlok as “distinct from a clown.” His performance is grounded in historical significance, creating a palpable sense of reality that resonates with viewers. Fellow actor Nicholas Hoult, who portrays Thomas Hutter, emphasizes how the performance transcends mere fiction, saying, “It doesn’t feel removed from reality; it feels like something that could exist.” This depth of authenticity is what elevates the horror in Nosferatu.
The plot follows Orlok’s obsession as he seeks to acquire property from Thomas Hutter, whose unaware complicity is exploited by the Count’s devoted servant. Hutter’s role is tragically manipulated, making him a mere pawn in Orlok’s dark ambitions to reach Ellen.
Audiences can expect a blend of thrilling and gruesome scenes throughout the film. However, Skarsgård reveals that portraying such an all-consuming evil proved to be “physically exhausting.” He recounts filming intense scenes: “We were pushing ourselves through 30 takes, which left my body sore. The demand for physicality took its toll; I was often screaming at the top of my lungs.”
Nosferatu is set for release in US theaters on December 25 and will hit UK screens on January 1. Horror fans looking for new thrills can also explore the latest streaming options available this month.
