Although HBO’s The Penguin will further develop Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, fans who were anticipating a cameo appearance by Robert Pattinson will be let down.
Despite fans’ hopes, showrunner and writer Lauren LeFranc has confirmed that Pattinson’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader will not be featured in the new TV show. It appears that viewers will have to patiently wait for The Batman 2 to see Pattinson reprise his role.
Despite his exclusion, there is a valid justification for it. The Penguin will delve into the dark and corrupt underworld of Gotham, honing in on Oswald Cobblepot’s efforts to regain his position after the events of the initial Batman film in 2022.
Despite popular belief, LeFranc has argued that including Bruce Wayne is unnecessary. In an interview with SFX, LeFranc explained, “I recognize the desire for Batman to be present, but I believe the show can still be impactful without him. It just has a different kind of impact.”
Matt’s movies are centered around the character of Batman, giving the audience a view from above, looking down on the city. This provides a unique perspective. On the other hand, with Oz, the audience is immersed in the bustling city streets, surrounded by the grime and dirt. The main character, Oz, is constantly striving to climb his way to the top, looking up with determination.
I believe Gotham is a fascinating city that warrants uncovering more unlocked doors and exploring them to see what we discover.
Reeves also concurs that Wayne is not an essential addition, stating that the show simply expands upon what is already fundamentally present.
In his statement, he emphasized, “We are aware that this takes place in the world of Batman. However, we are exploring a different path. So, the presence of Batman, the Riddler, and all the events from the previous movie are still present. They serve as inspiration and guide our starting point.”
Despite lacking a traditional superhero, The Penguin is still a fitting addition to Reeves’ universe. The show is set just one week after the film’s conclusion, as Gotham reels from the destruction caused by the Riddler’s mass flooding.
The anticipation among fans to see the return of their newest Batman has increased in recent weeks following the theatrical re-release of The Batman earlier this month. On social media, the film is being hailed as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time – a praise that raises the expectations even higher for The Penguin.
The Penguin’s release date on Max has been set for September 19, 2024.
