Why season 3 of One Punch Man will not be animated by the MAPPA studio?

The latest announcement regarding season 3 of One Punch Man surprised many fans: no, it is not the MAPPA studio which will be responsible for the animation of the superheroes – here is why.

The ordeal is finally over for One Punch Man fans who were impatiently awaiting news regarding season 3. It must be said that the lack of news was becoming quite worrying, the previous season having been broadcast in 2019.

The series made its anime debut in 2015, with expertise from studio Madhouse. The second season was the work of studio JC Staff in 2019. Many reports then suggested that the anime had changed studios again for its third season, with the arrival of MAPPA.

Which may have disturbed more than one, after the controversies concerning the studio in 2023 concerning Jujutsu Kaisen and the working conditions of the animators. But the concern no longer needs to be: it is ultimately the JC Staff studio which will remain in charge. Why was MAPPA overshadowed?

Why the MAPPA studio is not responsible for the animation of season 3 of One Punch Man

Studio MAPPA has never been officially confirmed as the animation studio for One Punch Man season 3.

The franchise announced its third anime season in August 2022, accompanied by a key visual by character designer Chikashi Kubota. The latter was also the character designer for season 2, while JC Staff worked on the series.

Additionally, in December 2022, One Punch Man’s official X/Twitter account warned fans about posting misleading information on social media. The account thus published: “This account is the only one that is official on Twitter for the anime One Punch Man. Please be careful not to be misled by information from fake or leaker accounts. Publish the right information at the right time. Thank you for your cooperation.”

The post was shared as rumors of MAPPA hosting One Punch Man season 3 circulated online. Despite the warning, many still believed that MAPPA would be in charge of the project until the last official announcement by the JC Staff studio on February 29, 2024.

To date, the franchise has not revealed the release date for season 3. But we can reasonably expect an upcoming announcement, especially after the latest One Punch Man teaser revealing the next villain in action.
