For years, there has been talk of an Invincible live-action movie, but showrunner Robert Kirkman has recently addressed the challenges that have caused delays in the process.
Since its initial release in 2021, Invincible has been the shining star of Prime Video. The popular series has since spawned a spinoff special and an explosive second season, solidifying its place as a staple on the streaming service.
Despite already achieving success with its comic book and TV series, the Invincible franchise is now aiming to expand even further by adding a live-action movie to its repertoire. However, the journey towards its creation has presented numerous obstacles.
During a conversation with The Direct, Robert Kirkman revealed the challenges that have delayed the project. He stated that the development process has been lengthy because it is difficult to determine how to differentiate the comic, animated series, and potential live-action movie. The goal is to create a unique experience while possibly staying true to the original story.
He emphasized, “Despite the show needing to offer a unique experience, it must still stay faithful to ‘Invincible’ in captivating ways. However, it also needs to have its own identity and stand on its own. This is a concept we are devoting a lot of time to perfecting. I am confident that when it finally comes to fruition, it will be truly impressive.”
The Hollywood Reporter first announced the development of the Invincible live-action movie in April 2017, four years prior to its premiere on Prime Video.
Despite limited information about the movie, the outlet did verify that Seth Rogan and his longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg would be responsible for writing, directing, and producing the Universal adaptation.
Kirkman’s company, Skybound Entertainment, was set to produce the movie, marking their first collaboration with the movie studio.
Despite being seven years since the project was initially proposed, Kirkman stated that the team is still collaborating with Universal to bring the live-action adaptation to fruition.
Despite the showrunner’s honesty, Invincible fans should not anticipate the release of the film in the near future.
“Kirkman expressed the importance of perfection for the movie. Therefore, much time is being dedicated to aligning all the necessary pieces and ensuring that everything works seamlessly in order to produce the best possible result. As a result, the development process has been ongoing for a significant amount of time and will likely continue for some time.”
