Why the Most Unlikable Character in Virgin River is Surprisingly Relatable

More than any other character, Charmaine has faced the most backlash from fans of Virgin River. Yet, could it be that she is the one we connect with the deepest?

As we approach Virgin River Season 6, Charmaine’s role has been a significant point of contention; she has often been labeled one of the least liked characters throughout this compelling series. This negativity largely stems from the prolonged narrative of her pregnancy, which extended up to Season 5 Part 2.

In addition, she has faced criticism for her poor treatment of Mel, frequently leading Jack on despite being aware of Mel’s feelings for him.

Interestingly, recent re-watch sessions of the show before the new episodes drop in December have led some fans to reconsider their stance.

One Reddit user commented, “While rewatching Virgin River, I’ve realized I embody Charmaine in every relationship. Fun to hang out with, but just not the one to commit to. Perhaps this explains my empathy for her—until the whole twins deception, that was a bit too much for me. Even after two years, Jack still didn’t choose her. She merely wanted to feel loved.”

Another fan shared their feelings, saying, “I’ve always felt a tinge of sympathy towards Charmaine. Jack really wasn’t kind to her—he kept her hanging on longer than necessary, fully aware that she wanted something more serious. He should have communicated his feelings openly.”

A third commenter went even further, stating, “Jack totally played Charmaine, which is about as low as a guy can go, particularly at his age. He manipulated her feelings over the years and was definitely not the upstanding gentleman he appeared to be. However, she might have dodged a bullet… I mean, that whining was pretty unbearable.”

When Mel first arrived in Virgin River in Season 1, Jack and Charmaine were involved in a tumultuous, on-again, off-again relationship. However, everything shifted when Mel decided to stay in town, leading Charmaine to vent her frustrations at Mel after several unsuccessful attempts to revive her romance with Jack.

Further developments revealed that Calvin, who was presumed dead, is actually the father of Charmaine’s twins in Season 5, which some fans found incredibly unrealistic. This storyline encapsulates her challenging journey, which has certainly sparked a variety of opinions among viewers.

As Virgin River Season 7 has been confirmed, we can expect even more twists in Charmaine’s story, and perhaps a deeper understanding of her character that fans have yet to explore.

Virgin River Season 6 premieres on December 19. Until then, you can explore more about the setting of the series, how to dive into the original novels, and catch up with additional streaming shows.
