Why Todd Howard Won’t Remake or Port Fallout 1 & 2

During an interview, Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard stated that remakes or ports of Fallout 1 and 2 were not being considered, as he believed it was best to leave them in their original form.

Despite the recent surge in popularity of the Prime Video series, fans should not anticipate Bethesda to quickly release any new games or remakes for Fallout.

In a conversation with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Howard firmly stated that the developer currently has no plans to update the first two Fallout games, despite the numerous references to them throughout the series.

The discussion about remakes of Fallout 1 and 2 begins at 20:03.

Despite acknowledging that Bethesda had thought about revisiting the games, which originally came out in 1997 and 1998, Howard emphasized the importance of ensuring their availability and functionality on PC.

He elaborated on his disinterest in remaking the games, stating, “I believe that part of the appeal of games from that time and the original Fallouts is their age. I would never want to cover up that charm by altering the mechanics to make them more contemporary.”

Howard’s final thoughts were that he would prefer people to experience the way the game was intended, as long as it can be downloaded and runs smoothly.

Despite being uncertain about the possibility of Fallout 1 and 2 coming to consoles, Howard stated that “anything is possible.”However, his further explanation suggests that console ports should not be anticipated in the near future by fans.

“The question is, should we invest our time in that particular task at the moment? Or would it be more beneficial to keep it in its original form on a PC?”Howard contemplated before expressing his stance on the matter.

“In my opinion, the optimal method for playing it is currently on a PC with a mouse and keyboard, as it was originally intended.”
