Why Vangeance betrayed Julius in Black Clover: An Explanation

Throughout Yuki Tabata’s manga series Black Clover, two of the most captivating and mysterious characters are William Vangeance and Julius Novachrono. This remains true in the early stages of the series, as they both hold crucial and influential roles leading up to the Elf Reincarnation arc.

The climax of the Royal Knights arc revolves around the two characters and their actions. The leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, Patolli, reveals himself through Vangeance and defeats Julius in a battle. This event often leaves Black Clover fans wondering why Vangeance betrayed Julius and handed him over to Patolli. However, there is a simple and clear explanation for this action.

Vangeance’s Betrayal: The Result of His Friendship with Julius and Patolli

William Vangeance ultimately betrayed both Julius Novachrono and Patolli in Black Clover because he was equally close with both of them. He hoped that they could resolve their differences without his interference, but ultimately he couldn’t choose between them and decided to sacrifice himself to Patolli in order to allow them to work things out.

Vangeance’s indecision stemmed from the fact that both sides had played significant roles in his life and helped him survive his difficult upbringing. He was born as an illegitimate child to a noble, and was marked with a scar that was deemed a curse by others. His situation only worsened when his father passed away, and he was forced to live with his abusive foster mother in the Noble Realm.

Over a course of three years, Vangeance encountered both Julius and had Patolli awaken within him, being fully aware of it. During this period, he developed a strong bond with both individuals – with Julius due to being in the Grey Deer squad and with Patolli because they shared a body. These two are ultimately his closest companions, and his betrayal of Julius in Black Clover stems from the intense emotions he harbors for them.

Understanding the Betrayal of Julius by Vangeance in Black Clover

Despite providing an explanation for Vangeance’s betrayal of Julius, there is still the question of how this betrayal was carried out. This goes back to the Eye of the Midnight Sun’s initial emergence, where Vangeance had to deceive Julius and conceal his absences from important events and battles, as he would surrender his body to Patolli, the leader of the Midnight Sun.

The betrayal first surfaced towards the end of Black Clover’s Royal Knights arc. As the group prepares to attack the Eye of the Midnight Sun’s base, Vangeance arranges a meeting with Yami at the Golden Dawn’s headquarters. However, instead of meeting with Yami, he goes to the Royal Capital to express his gratitude to the Wizard King. He then apologizes and offers his body to Patolli, initiating the transformation process.

After the initial battle, Vangeance remains in a deep sleep within Patolli, only to awaken after the fight’s end and discover Julius’ death. Overcome with grief, Vangeance’s spirit sinks further into slumber within their shared body. Although William does express regret for his actions later on, he takes no action to save Julius in the moment.

Conclusion

The reason behind Vangeance’s betrayal of Julius lies in his strong bond with both Patolli and the Wizard King. He was torn between the two and unable to pick a side, ultimately leading him to distance himself from the conflict and allow events to unfold on their own.
