The latest Wicked trailer reveals that the film is concealing a significant secret from its audience regarding its theatrical release.
Jon Chu’s adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical is set to hit theaters just in time for Thanksgiving 2024.
Wicked, featuring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey, serves as a prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, exploring the origin story of Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the East.
The musical runs nearly three hours, leading fans to speculate that the film adaptation would have a similar length. However, the movie will actually be divided into two distinct parts, a detail that has not been heavily advertised.

In April 2022, Director Jon Chu confirmed on Twitter that both Wicked Part One and Part Two were in production, stating, “As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie, but TWO!!”
In December 2023, composer Stephen Schwartz reiterated this decision in an interview with Collider, emphasizing, “We ultimately decided to do two movies because we couldn’t get it all crammed into one movie without, we felt, really compromising the story. We thought no one wanted to sit for four hours and see one movie so it got divided into two movies.”
Despite this confirmation, the promotional materials for the upcoming movie have not clearly stated that the story will be released in two parts, leading many fans to suspect this information is intentionally being concealed.
One fan expressed their curiosity about the absence of ‘part one’ in the film’s promotional content, while another noted that this information was how they discovered the film would be in two parts. A third fan speculated that the discussion about the division is still ongoing, pointing to promotional materials that seem to suggest “Act Two.”
Despite the uncertainty, some fans support the decision to create a two-part film. One theorized it might be titled something like Wicked and Wicked: Rise of Elphaba, implying the story’s conclusion would coincide with a natural intermission point. Another added, “We ALL KNOW it’s going to end at the intermission part – we all know it *has* to be two parts or that movie would be damn near 5hrs. LOL.”
Wicked: Part One is scheduled to premiere on November 22, 2024, with Part Two following a year later on November 26, 2025.
