Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will recreate the second part of the beloved 1997 classic, but will it retain the same open world structure as the original? Here’s everything we know so far.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the highly anticipated sequel to 2020’s Remake and is shaping up to be one of the biggest games of 2024. This sequel picks up right after the events of Midgar, as Cloud and his team pursue Sephiroth in a story that should take dozens of hours to complete.
In the 1997 original, this point in the journey is where the scope of the game is revealed and it becomes a completely open world. But given that these adaptations of the beloved RPG have already introduced many changes, many are wondering if Rebirth will feature the same structure.
So here’s everything you need to know about whether or not Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be an open world.
Rebirth will feature many large open spaces.
Does Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have an open world?
No, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not an open world game in the traditional sense. However, it will feature large open areas that players can explore in different ways, whether on foot or by riding a Chocobo.
In a preview of the game by IGN, we can see a section leading to Juno and in which we can see that the world is “fairly closed at the edges” , meaning fans will not be able to travel freely to different areas.
The original game was connected by a large world map that could be completely explored, but it seems the developers decided to change things up in an effort to delve deeper into sections that were previously deserted.
The areas players are dropped into will likely depend on where they are in the story, but there is a chance they will be able to return to previously visited locations once unlocked to complete side quests and collect items, just like in Final Fantasy 16.
That being said, it’s important to keep in mind that all of this is only based on early previews of the game. We’ll be sure to update this section once we get our hands on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and that we will be able to have a clear insight into his world.
