Will Neff Addresses Twitch Ban Following Fan Requests

Twitch personality Will Neff has addressed his recent ban from the platform due to a copyright infringement while streaming a movie on his channel.

The OTK member has amassed a considerable following on Twitch, known for his Just Chatting streams, along with gameplay of titles like Deadlock and Golf with Friends.

On September 25, 2024, he engaged with his audience to discuss cinema and was streaming the Shawshank Redemption when he faced an unexpected ban for copyright reasons, occurring just moments before the film concluded.

“Content from this channel has been removed at the request of the copyright holder,” his channel displayed.

Fans expressed their frustration on social media regarding the timing of the ban, many feeling discontent that it occurred mere minutes before the film finished.

“Banned in the last few minutes of watching Shawshank Redemption. Possibly reported for DMC by an upset viewer that he responded to mid-movie. The viewer referred to Will as a glorified DVD player and accused him of DMCA violations while talking during the film,” one user remarked.

Another added: “We were at the end of the movie too!! what the heck.”

“Film class was just about to get interesting with the Q & A,” a third commenter stated, referencing the stream as a “film class.”

Will Neff quickly reacted to his suspension, clarifying that it’s only a 48-hour ban.

“Hey y’all, 48-hour ban. No hard feelings at all. I fully accept the risks of teaching a film course online and will strive to improve in the future. I’m grateful to have a platform to share my love for film,” he expressed.

Will Neff previously utilized Twitch’s “Watch Parties” feature frequently, which enabled streamers to watch films via Amazon’s Prime Video without copyright concerns. Each viewer needed an Amazon Prime subscription to access the movie.

However, Twitch discontinued the Watch Parties feature on April 2, 2024, to prioritize other functionalities on the Amazon-run platform.

This incident follows Twitch’s recent announcement regarding updates to their banning policies, which will now include the clips and chat conversations that led to the user’s suspension.
