Will Nori Discover the Shire? Rings of Power Star Discusses Harfoot Theory

Ever since Sûzat was mentioned in the Rings of Power, a captivating theory has emerged: could Nori and Poppy have discovered the Shire in the Third Age? One of the series’ stars is particularly enthusiastic about this possibility.

Think back to the moment when Nori and Poppy first arrived at the Stoors’ village in Rhûn and encountered Gundabel.

During their conversation, they reference Sadoc Burrows, the leader of their clan who met his end in Season 1, a name that sparks recognition. It is revealed that Sadoc was a descendant of the Stoors, and an earlier leader sought a place he referred to as “Sûzat.”

This name is another moniker for the Shire, and while it might simply be a nod to a legendary location from The Lord of the Rings and the future of Hobbits, could it be foreshadowing events in Rings of Power?

“I mean, that is a very exciting theory. I don’t look at a lot of theories at all. But yeah, it’s very exciting. It’s set so many years before that and there are so many different directions it can go in… but that would be amazing,” said the star.

This theory isn’t baseless. The timeline in Rings of Power is condensed, so it’s important not to get overly focused on the specific chronological details (the series is anticipated to conclude with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, marking the end of the Second Age).

In Tolkien’s lore, the Shire was established by Marcho and Blanco, two Bree-hobbit brothers who led a group of Harfoots westward, eventually reaching Arthedain.

However, Rings of Power isn’t obligated to adhere strictly to the original material, and Nori could very well play a crucial role in the founding of the Shire. Given their nomadic nature, both Nori and Poppy are prime candidates to guide the Stoors westward after the attack by the Dark Wizard.

Interestingly, the Stoors’ dwellings – known as Smials – closely resemble the Hobbit-holes seen in Bag End, and Nori now possesses this knowledge.

Moreover, with the revelation that the Stranger is Gandalf, it could further clarify his affection for Hobbits if he had known those who established the Shire.

Although they may be separated for the time being, wherever Nori and Poppy reunite, let’s hope it’s in a place filled with “endless streams of cold water and rolling hills so soft that a family could dig a hole and live in it in less than a month.”
