Will there be a Baldur’s Gate 4? Developers break the silence

Baldur’s Gate 3 ‘s incredible popularity makes it a perfect candidate for a sequel, but will it get one? The developers have finally answered the question of whether we’ll see a Larian Baldur’s Gate 4.

When your game breaks player count records on Steam and wins Game of the Year, you usually start thinking about a sequel. Baldur’s Gate 3 accomplished both of those things, but it looks like Larian is taking a different path.

According to reports from IGN’s coverage of the Game Developer’s Conference 2024, Swen Vincke, the director of Baldur’s Gate 3, has extinguished Larian’s hopes of a sequel. At the same time, he confirmed that there would be no DLC or expansions either.

Vincke briefly explained the reason why the studio is not capitalizing on the game’s success and continuing the franchise. Larian will of course continue to develop other titles.

Why won’t Larian develop Baldur’s Gate 4?

Vincke, and by extension Larian, abandons Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property. “We’re not going to do Baldur’s Gate 4…we’re going to move on,” he said.

Vincke explained that he is eager to try “something new” and is working hard on a new project. Being in its early stages, it’s keeping details under wraps, but it won’t be related to D&D in any way.

Despite the heartbreaking announcement, Vincke reminded the audience that Baldur’s Gate is in fact the intellectual property of Wizards of the Coast. He clarified that they would be free to continue the franchise with another developer.

Larian’s passion and dedication in developing Baldur’s Gate 3 was a large part of the game’s success. It is uncertain whether people would want to play a Baldur’s Gate 4 without Larian’s involvement.

Better to play another character on Baldur’s Gate 3 then. Consult our guides to make the most of it.
