After new statements from director Denis Villeneuve, the creation of a Dune 3 is more likely than ever. How many films are planned for the franchise in total?
Denis Villeneuve’s first film Dune, released in 2021, can boast of having been entitled to a warm critical reception. Its worldwide box office results were also strong, bringing in more than double its reported budget of $166 million, and thus securing the sequel on the big screen.
Dune: Part II is due out at the end of February, and promotion for the film has kicked into high gear. Its director and the main cast carry out interviews and show sets. The opportunity for the team to tease more adventures in the sandy universe of Arrakis.
Will there be a Dune 3 directed by Denis Villeneuve?
If Denis Villeneuve gets what he wants, there will be a Dune 3. And the film would then adapt Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel, The Messiah of Dune.
During an interview with Time, the screenwriter and director confirmed his desire to do it again: ” Dune Messiah should be the last Dune film for me. “
As for the casting of the new franchise, he also gave his opinion on a potential third opus. Timothée Chalamet, interpreter of Paul Atréides, for example told Total Film: “The idea is very exciting. If the moment and opportunity to complete the story with The Messiah presents itself, I think we will all be very excited.”
For her part, Zendaya, the actress playing Chani, told Fandango: “Would we be up for it? Obviously! Every time Denis calls, it’s a yes for me. I’m excited to see what happens. […] It’s a lot to take in, but there are no better hands than Denis’s to adapt it all with care and love.”
When will the film adapting Dune Messiah be released?
During a press conference in December – reported by Variety – Denis Villeneuve declared that writing for Dune 3 had already begun, specifying: “The script is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time… It’s a dream to make a third film… it would definitely make sense to me.”
But Villeneuve added that he might need a break between the second and third games: “I don’t know exactly when I will return to Arrakis. I could take a detour first, just to get away from the sun a little. For my mental health, I might prefer to do something in between, but my dream remains to go one last time to this planet that I love. “
In the meantime, Dune: Part II will be released in theaters on February 28, 2024.
