The new hit series, Manhunt, follows the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s assassin and has just wrapped up its first season on Apple TV+. Here’s everything we currently know about the possibility of a Season 2.
Tobias Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton in Manhunt, portraying Abraham Lincoln’s trusted friend and War Secretary. Following Lincoln’s assassination, Stanton was responsible for locating and apprehending his killer, John Wilkes Booth, in order to seek justice.
The story was narrated over the course of seven episodes, with non-linear timelines depicting both the events leading up to Lincoln’s death and the conspirators’ attempts to evade capture afterwards.
Our in-depth conclusion analysis is available for your reading, and below, you can find information on whether the final episode hints at a potential second season and what it could entail. However, please be cautious of SPOILERS AHEAD…
Will there be a second season of Manhunt?
At this time, there are no plans for a second season of Manhunt. The first season tells a complete story, with the capture and death of John Wilkes Booth in Episode 5 and the imprisonment or execution of his co-conspirators in Episode 7.
The series concludes by addressing unresolved matters, displaying text about Stanton, President Andrew Johnson, John Surratt Jr. and Dr. Samuel Mudd (who collaborated with the assassination plot), and Mary Simms, a former slave.
Despite Stanton remaining in his role as War Secretary, Johnson became the first American President to face impeachment. Although he narrowly avoided being removed from office, he ultimately lost the chance for a second term. Although John Surratt Jr. was extradited to the United States, he was ultimately not found guilty. Despite this, he continued to hold rallies throughout the country, proudly boasting about his connection to Booth.
Mary Simms was among 10 courageous black individuals who gave testimony against Dr. Mudd. Her account was documented in the trial record. The 13th Amendment, which ended slavery in the United States, was ratified just five months after the trial. Then, six months later, the 14th Amendment was passed, granting citizenship and equal rights to black Americans.
The conclusion of the show sees Stanton’s death due to asthma, caused by organ failure. However, it is revealed that two months after his passing, the 15th Amendment was also passed, giving all US citizens the right to vote. This was the final of Lincoln’s 3 Reconstruction Amendments, effectively bringing this story to its end.
What Could Happen in a Sequel Series?
Possible upcoming Manhunt installments may center on an entirely different pursuit.
This specific manhunt has concluded, as John Wilkes Booth has been killed and his accomplices have faced consequences. However, it is possible for a follow-up series to highlight other manhunts that occurred subsequent to this event, showcasing the evolution and advancement of police tactics over time.
When questioned about the possibility of a future season for the show, lead actor Tobias Menzies informed The Hollywood Reporter that he had not been included in any discussions. He then went on to say, “I am satisfied with the story we have portrayed. However, if there were to be a second season, it would be crucial to have a clear understanding of the next story we would be telling.”
