Will there be a season 5 of True Detective?

Season 4 of True Detective has ended, leaving many viewers alone in front of their screen. Will the series end there, or will it get a season 5?

Throughout its existence, the True Detective series has had its ups and downs. Season 1, which featured Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, created great enthusiasm among spectators and critics, easily qualifying it as a masterpiece.

Rather than offering a sequel, the series chose an anthological format, offering completely different stories and protagonists for subsequent seasons. A new case, a new setting, new actors therefore punctuated the second season. If the idea was good, this part did not manage to compare with the previous one, and was not received with much warmth.

Season 3 managed to turn things around in the meantime, but the fourth, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, got the best reviews of the series. The bet was however risky, because the creator Nic Pizzolatto had left the ship, leaving the controls to a new showrunner, Issa Lopez. So, will there be a season 5 of True Detective?

Will there be a season 5 of True Detective?

HBO has yet to make an announcement regarding the future of True Detective, but given the series’ track record, we should certainly expect some good news in the near future.

Indeed, season 4 was a huge success. Between rave reviews and high scores on various review sites like Rotten Tomatoes, this fourth chapter was treated to an exceptional reception.

For its part, Deadline also highlighted the surprising audience figures for Night Country: even before the broadcast of its last episode, season 4 had surpassed the first season with McConaughey and Harrelson. There were in fact 12.7 million spectators for the fifth episode of season 4, compared to 11.9 million for the entire first season.

If the media has tempered by specifying that streaming will certainly have facilitated access to the series, it is clear that this is a good record. Especially since True Detective: Night Country only had six episodes, instead of the usual eight.

With such figures, HBO seems to have free rein to give the green light to a season 5. Obviously, this would then be a completely new story, since True Detective: Night Country offered a conclusion to its spectators in its sixth and final episode.
