Wind Breaker: Episode 6 – Toma’s Victory Over Sakura
Summary of the episode
The sixth episode of Wind Breaker opened with the Shishitoren team’s reaction to Hayato Suo’s victory. They regarded Bofurin as a problem as he left the stage and received congratulations from Hajime Umemiya. Suo then disclosed that his fighting style was self-taught, describing it as a “hodgepodge”from his master. He also apologized for getting emotional and attributed it to Haruka Sakura. In response, Sakura stated that he didn’t mind as long as Suo gave his all in their upcoming fight.
As Sakura and Suo continued to argue, Umemiya remarked on the positive impact they were having on each other and predicted that they would make a great team. Kanuma then pulled Arima aside and they both sat down. They discussed their recent defeats, with Kanuma expressing pessimism and believing that it marked the end for them.
Wind Breaker episode 6 featured Sakura preparing for her upcoming fight, but Toma Hiragi’s opponent Kota Sako stood up and made it clear that he wanted to fight first. Toma also observed that Jo Togame seemed hesitant to fight at that moment, and stated his trust in Sakura to secure the victory since he was the one who should have been facing Togame.
Umemiya then disclosed that while Toma is not known for talking about himself, it is not surprising that he knows Sako. Choji Tomimiya and Togame then wished Sako well, with the latter inquiring about the connection between him and Toma. Toma and Sako then stepped onto the stage, exchanging a few words as the excited crowd implored them to start their match.
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, the two continued their intense fight, with Toma initially taking a defensive stance while showcasing Sako’s impressive offensive abilities. Sako then called out Toma for underestimating him, stating that his past self is now a thing of the past, before charging at him once more. Togame and Tomimiya were both impressed by Sako’s skills and commented that he is one of their top five fighters, with Togame noting that Sako has been in more fights than anyone in Shishitoren.
During their fight, Sako’s constant berating of Toma further confirmed his reservations towards him. Toma remarked on Sako’s increased talkativeness, recalling how he used to be so quiet that Toma didn’t have to warn him about speaking during a fight to avoid biting his tongue. This memory was accompanied by a scene of Toma training Sako by a river when they were younger.
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, Sako’s frustration with the comments directed towards him caused him to increase his speed and deliver a powerful kick that sent Toma flying into a nearby wall. Sako then noted that Toma seemed to have become weaker, which he believed was due to his association with Bofurin. Sakura called out to Toma, reprimanding him for allowing himself to be ridiculed and for also subjecting their friends to the same treatment. Suo observed Sakura’s concern for her friends, causing Toma to feel embarrassed.
Umemiya clarified that Toma was the leader of the Bofurin team Tamonten, and then inquired if Sako was familiar with the meaning of the word. Toma, who had remained unfazed, retaliated against Sako while Umemiya explained that Tamonten, also known as Bishamonten, is the god of war who governs the battlefield. Toma jokingly remarked that he was enjoying the situation as he reached for more heartburn medicine, triggering a memory from their childhood days.
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, Sako was faced with bullying from a group of students who appeared to target him for his inaction. However, Toma intervened and put a stop to their actions, bringing the focus back to the present where everyone was amazed by the strength displayed by both Sako and Toma. Tomimiya praised Sako’s strength, but Togame pointed out that Toma had the advantage in the situation.
As Sako pondered how Toma could possess greater strength than him in their current forms, a younger version of himself approached Toma and inquired about why he had saved him. Toma responded that it was clearly an act of bullying and questioned if he should have simply stood by and done nothing. Sako then requested Toma’s guidance in learning how to fight, which eventually led to the events at the river.
Wind Breaker episode 6 featured Sako expressing his deep admiration for Toma and proudly walking behind him due to his strength. When Toma graduated, Sako stated his belief that he should take Furin’s top spot and promised to do anything to make it happen. He even offered to help Toma the following year, but Toma declined, explaining that he had decided to support Umemiya at Furin and it would be best if Sako did not follow him.
Toma had made the decision to relinquish Furin’s top position, explaining to Sako that he must forge his own path and pursue his own ambitions. As fate would have it, Sako was encountered by Tomimiya and Togame that same day, having just won a fight against several individuals. Fueled by determination, Sako pledged to join Shishitoren, grow stronger, and ultimately defeat Toma in order to make him rue his previous choices.
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, the story returned to the present where Sako expressed his frustration with Toma’s focus on making friends instead of solely dedicating himself to becoming stronger. Sako aggressively attacked Toma, claiming that he would never lose to someone who prioritized anything other than self-improvement. Toma, however, intercepted his fist and apologized for not living up to Sako’s expectations before rendering him unconscious.
Despite falling to his knees, Sako realized that Toma had nothing to apologize for. He acknowledged that Toma had always been looking out for him and that he was grateful for it. He also admitted that he may have been selfish in his desires, but Toma was the person he had always looked up to and he didn’t care about location or allegiances. All that mattered to him was following in Toma’s footsteps.
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, Sako fainted after a flashback to their middle school days where he promised to always follow Toma, even if Toma became the top player. In the present, the other members of Shishitoren were amazed by Toma’s abilities and saddened by Sako’s defeat. Togame then instructed someone to help Sako off stage, and Hiragi volunteered to do it himself.
Togame expressed gratitude towards Toma, but also mentioned that there was no need for him to handle Sako with such gentleness. As Toma went to retrieve Sako’s body, Togame was stopped by him, as he requested to wait until after his fight with Sakura to handle Sako. This could possibly imply that Togame may not be able to defeat Sakura, and Toma added that Togame’s methods would not make the Shishitoren stronger. The episode ended with Toma walking away and returning to Umemiya.
In review
In episode 6 of Wind Breaker, Toma and Sako’s backstory is skillfully incorporated into their gripping fight. The seamless integration of their past and present adds depth to both the battle and their personal history, making it a brilliant aspect of this part of the story.
Despite Sako’s defeat, his future remains promising due to Toma’s efforts to protect him from the Shishitoren. Additionally, Umemiya’s understanding and lack of curiosity about Sako and Toma’s past make it likely that he will fulfill his promise to Toma and join Furin in the future.
In summation
Episode 6 of Wind Breaker is a distressing and intense chapter as it showcases Toma’s win and the potential defeat of either Sakura or Umemiya. Although it would be satisfying to see a Furin victory, current indications suggest otherwise. Furthermore, considering the consequences for both Umemiya and the Bofurin in the event of his loss, it is probable that Togame will emerge victorious against Sakura in the upcoming episode.
