Windows 11 will provide you greater control over the applications that are installed by default.

It may be tough to manage your favorite default program on Windows, especially when Windows itself continually resetting your settings. This is especially true when you are attempting to browse the web, view movies, or perform other chores. It’s possible that this won’t be as big of an issue in the years to come.

There are a number different methods that Windows apps may use to add themselves to the taskbar and designate themselves as the application that should be used when opening specific URLs or files. The procedure can be complex, particularly when certain apps attempt to set themselves as the default without your awareness and when Windows has a tendency to change the settings after an update has been installed. Also, Windows will override some web operations, such as clicking links in the taskbar web search, so that they open in Microsoft Edge rather than the user’s currently selected default web browser.

In a recent blog post, Microsoft has promised to resolve some of the perplexing behaviors that are associated with the default programs. The company made the following statement: “We want to ensure that people are in control of what gets pinned to their Desktop, their Start menu, and their Taskbar as well as to be able to control their default applications such as their default browser through consistent, clear, and trustworthy system dialogs and settings that are provided by Windows.”

Microsoft is currently working on a new deep link URI for programs that when clicked will lead users straight to the page in Windows 11 that contains the default app settings. If you accept Firefox’s offer to become your system’s default web browser, for instance, the browser may then direct you to the Settings page, where you may alter which browser is set as the system’s default. With the use of a new application programming interface (API), Windows 11 will enable third-party programs to pin primary or secondary tiles to the taskbar. Users will be prompted to either accept or decline the change.

When application developers have had enough time to integrate these new best practices, the Windows team intends to “take efforts to prevent unrequested adjustments to a user’s choices” later on in this year. It would appear that this indicates that Windows 11 will eventually make it impossible for applications to modify the default settings by using the currently available methods, once the new APIs have been made available and applications have begun using them; however, these plans are subject to change. In addition to this, Microsoft has pledged to update Edge with the latest pinning and default features as soon as they become available.

It would appear that Microsoft is moving in the direction of making its default programs and taskbar pins more similar to their counterparts on Android and iPhone devices, where applications are unable to modify your settings without first requesting permission. If an app wishes to change the default browser on an Android or iPhone, for instance, it can only open the page in the Settings app of the operating system so that you may make the change yourself.

“in the coming months,” the newly added capability will be put through its paces in the Windows Insider Dev Channel.
