Despite the introduction of new generations of pocket monsters and various typings and forms, Pokemon VGC tournaments have consistently demonstrated a wide range of ‘mon selection over the years. Nonetheless, certain Pokemon have withstood the evolution of the meta while others have come and gone with the changing generations.

In his video ranking the top Pokemon from the Kanto region’s first generation, Glick declared Arcanine as the strongest, while also featuring Clefairy, Gyarados, Venusaur, Zapdos, and Charizard in the top 10.

According to Glick, Arcanine has consistently been one of the top-performing Pokemon in competitive play throughout its history and has been utilized in various generations. In fact, this fire type was featured on winning teams at regional tournaments in 2015 and continued to be heavily utilized as recently as 2023.

According to Glick, this Pokemon is a highly resilient support character. It shares similarities with Zapdos in terms of versatility. Despite primarily being a support Pokemon, it also has the ability to apply offensive pressure with moves such as Flare Blitz, Overheat, and even Burn Up. Its durability and limited weaknesses, along with the effectiveness of Will-O-Wisp, make it a reliable option in various formats and have earned it the reputation of being the glue that holds everything together.

Despite the presence of strong offensive teams at the top of the list, Glick emphasized that numerous trainers rely on their defensive Pokemon to form their competitive teams. These resilient creatures are crucial in supporting and protecting other Pokemon, and are essential in executing the trainer’s most impactful attacks on the intended target.

According to Glick, Arcanine is widely considered to be the best defensive Pokemon in most formats, with the added bonus of having a strong offensive presence, solidifying its position as the top Pokemon from Kanto.
