Woman divides viewers after buying $30 bag of ice from Erewhon

A video of an Erewhon customer purchasing a $30 bag of ice balls from the upscale supermarket has gained viral attention on TikTok.

Lizzie Dushaj, popularly known as lizziedushaj on TikTok, recently purchased a pack of eight cocktail ice balls for $30 from Erewhon, the famous California-based grocery store that has been making waves for its expensive items.

According to the video, which has gained over 9 million views, the item is designed specifically for whiskey, but the speaker admits to not consuming alcohol. She comments that the product is made from unique minerals that prevent dilution of the drink.

While not explicitly stating the use of any “special minerals,”the store does advertise that their ice balls have a slower melt rate compared to regular ice cubes, making them suitable for both alcoholic drinks and iced coffees.

Lizzie reached into the bag and pulled out an ice ball, eager to give it a try in her video. However, her disappointment was evident in her voice as she declared that it “tasted like water.”Undeterred, she dropped the ice ball into a glass of water, hoping to see if it would indeed turn crystal clear as advertised. After a short wait, she retrieved the ice ball and was astonished to find that it resembled a “crystal ball.”

After leaving the ice ball on her sink for 20 minutes, Lizzie noticed that it had only slightly decreased in size and hadn’t melted significantly. She admitted, “I’m too lazy to test how long it will take to completely melt.”

Many TikTok users were incredulous in the comment section after witnessing someone perform a taste test on ice. “Am I really seeing you taste test ice?”one individual commented. Another exclaimed, “That taste test was mind-blowing!”

Many were taken aback by the high cost of the ice bag. One user even compared the situation to an episode of Black Mirror, stating that it was the final straw. Another person joked that it was like paying for premium air in your tires. A third individual questioned why anyone would pay $30 for something that their fridge can do for free.

Lizzie later disclosed that she did not have to pay for the ice balls. In the comments, she stated, “The cashier did not ring it up for me.”Despite creating a video about the incident, TikTok removed it for allegedly promoting criminal behavior.

The prices at Erewhon are intentionally set high, as co-owner Tony Antoci revealed to The Hollywood Reporter: “Our target market is the affluent.”
