For 16 years, he modeled in coffee advertisements, a role often associated with top celebrities. His sophisticated appearance leads many to believe he was raised in affluence.
In reality, he was born in a secluded mountain village in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province. His childhood was spent outdoors, playing in nature, fishing by the river, and always sporting a sun-kissed complexion.
Interestingly, as a child, he made some extra money by foraging for herbs in the mountains and even catching and selling snakes, which has sparked considerable discussion.
Won Bin, the youngest among five siblings, grew up in a family that struggled financially. His father worked in a coal mine to support the household, managing school fees and living costs.
After many years in the mines, his father suffered from health issues due to coal dust accumulation in his lungs. To show gratitude for his parents’ sacrifices, Won Bin moved to Seoul at 20.
How much did he eventually earn?
He made a successful debut in 1997 with the KBS2 drama “Propose” and even showcased designs for the late fashion icon André Kim. His popularity surged through various projects.
After achieving stardom with “Autumn in My Heart,” it was reported that he could command up to 800 million won (approximately 600,000 USD) for each commercial, a figure that left many astounded.
With his earnings, Won Bin purchased an old house in Gangnam, Seoul, in 2014, demolished it, and constructed a three-story residence with a basement for around 5 billion won (approximately 4 million USD).
It is reported that he continues to reside there with his wife, actress Lee Na-young, and their son. As of 2019, the property’s value had risen to 7 billion won (about 5 million USD).
Additionally, a building he acquired in Seoul’s Seongdong District for 2.1 billion won (approximately 1.6 million USD) has increased in value to 4.2 billion won, while another property in Gangnam, bought for 14.5 billion won (around 11 million USD), is now estimated at over 30 billion won (approximately 23 million USD).
In keeping with his promise to give back to his parents, Won Bin also presented them with a luxurious 120-pyeong (around 4000 square feet) home, for which he was hands-on in the interior design, garnering admiration from many.
