The usual rhythm of World of Warcraft was disrupted when Blizzard revealed that the upcoming expansion, The War Within, would be the initial release of three expansions to come out in a shorter timeframe. As a result, the game’s developers have confirmed that all three expansions are currently being actively developed.
“Development for The War Within is nearing completion this year, while the 12th expansion, Midnight, is also currently in progress. The Lost Titan, the 13th expansion, is also being developed, though it is in its early stages.”
“Having the story planned out well in advance provides us with numerous opportunities. One of these is the ability to carefully consider when we introduce new features to the game in support of the ongoing storyline. These features must be timeless, as the ones we create now are designed to endure.”
We aim to ensure that there are connecting elements among all of them that hold significance. These elements not only contribute to the narrative of our upcoming expansions, but also enhance the overall interaction and immersion within our world.
“Our team has a longer-term perspective, enabling us to strategize and potentially establish stronger connections throughout our content and features. Simultaneously, we aim to expedite the release of our expansions even more quickly than before, which is why we are implementing parallel development.”
The World of Warcraft team’s decision to announce three expansions at the same time was certainly a significant shift in tactics. As a result, they have also increased the frequency of releasing patches, both before and after The War Within is released.
Despite the need for concurrent development cycles, this announcement will bring comfort to fans who have noticed a disconnect between past expansions.
